♻️ Free Agricultural Tire Recycling Event in Williams County

🚜 The Williams County Health Department is partnering with the Williams County Engineer Office to host a free agricultural tire recycling event sponsored by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

📅 Thursday, September 24, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

📍Williams County Engineer’s Office
12953 County Road G, Bryan, Ohio

🛞 A limit of 10 tires per vehicle applies. The event is open to Ohio residents only, and tire dealers are not eligible to participate.

Accepted tires include:
• Large tractor tires
• Wagon tires
• Semi-truck tires
• Large-vehicle tires
• Large farming-equipment tires

Passenger-car, pickup-truck, lawn-mower, motorcycle and other small tires will not be accepted.

⚠️ Tires must be removed from the rims before recycling.

Those bringing more than 10 tires should call Shannon at 419-485-3141, extension 109.

We did some more pioneer training today to make sure all the pioneer reps in the area know all the ins and outs of all our varieties. Kay brought along the newest next generation kiddo to learn too even if he slept through most of the meeting/training.

This weeks Agronomy Update from our Pioneer Seeds agronomist linked here. Included is a chart addressing many of the common questions I receive regarding corn and soybean fungicide applications, what to include in the tank, etc. also included is a summary of corn and soybean growth stages. Soybean growth stages can be especially hard to remember.

While some areas remain very wet, others have turned very dry. The most critical time for corn yield determination is the 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after tassel. R3 and R4 (milk and dough) are the next most important stages for having adequate water available.

Soybeans continue to grow, add nodes, and flower until early R5 growth stage. R5 and R6 are the most critical stages for determining soybean yield. R4 and R3 are the next most important stages in soybeans.

In general, July is critical for corn yields, while August is critical for soybeans. With later planted crops, this is shifted a couple weeks later.

Our agronomist has begun finding a very small amount of tar spot and gray leaf spot over the last few days. He has seen tar spot in Fulton, Henry, Erie, and Huron counties this week. In each case corn was tasseled or very close to tasseled, had received significant rain in the last couple weeks, and was either corn-on-corn or in an area where we have historically found tar spot earlier in the season. Corn at similar growth stages in drier areas has been very clean.

The tar spot John our agronomist has found has been very low incidence and very low severity (very few and very small spots found on very few leaves, so far). This lines up with expected timing of beginning to find disease over the last few years. Finding tar spot at these very low levels does not warrant immediate panic, but does signal the need for planning for timely fungicide application. Tar spot and other diseases will continue to increase in severity, especially when free water is available on leaves for 7-10 hours.

Lastly, it has not been hard to find “black spots” on corn leaves in every field I look in. Don’t confuse minor insect feeding and bug p**p for tar spot or other diseases (see picture).
