Cheers to the second Friday of ! To continue the celebration of the beloved melon, let's share the story of how watermelons get from farm to fork. Watermelons are grown in rows and raised in beds composed of well-drained sandy soils, to prevent spoiling.

All watermelons are handpicked from the vine roughly after three months of planting. Picking crews then hand-to-hand load the vivid green melons into trucks for transportation. Once at a packing facility, watermelons are washed and separated based on size and quality. Depending on size and quality, the mouthwatering fruit gets shipped worldwide for consumption! Did you know bee pollination is essential for a successful watermelon crop? Honeybees and wild native bees pollinate approximately 75% of the fruits and vegetables grown in the U.S. Since watermelons do not self-pollinate and have separate male and female flowers, bees must transfer 500 to 1,000 large, sticky pollen grains from male to female flowers. Watermelon flowers are only open for one day, making it vital that the flower is visited by bees on that day, so that the opportunity for pollination is not missed! This means plenty of bees are needed for pollinating a field of watermelons! Be sure to pick up locally-grown watermelon Red Mountain Produce and other New Mexico retailers.
