"As we continued to expand after going full-time farming in 2019 our fundamental limit of our irrigation system was overall flow or GPM and the restriction of flow caused by small attachment points at frost free hydrants, home gardener four-zone timers and garden hoses. Theoretically, one 1.5-inch layflat with four lime green Senniger mini wobblers on 3-foot risers could water six beds at a time."

Not sure how to use garlic scapes in the kitchen? Think of them as a milder, fresh version of garlic cloves. Chop or slice them for stir fry, soup bases, pizza toppings, pesto, roasted veggies, eggs, and more! Really anywhere you’d normally use minced or sliced garlic.

Since garlic scapes are milder in flavor, use one or two whole scapes in place of one clove of garlic in your recipes. Pick up a few from our Farm Store next week and give them a go! Happy cooking! 🌱

FARM STORE FEATURE: Janie’s Mill 🌾

Located in Ashkum, Illinois, Janie's Mill produces beautifully stone-ground organic grains and flours with incredible flavor and quality. We love knowing these grains are grown and milled close to home, with so much care behind every bag.

In our Farm Store you’ll find:
~ Cornmeal
~ Buckwheat flour
~ All-purpose flour
~ High-protein flour

These are also the flours House of Rufus uses for their sourdough!

One favorite around here is the buckwheat flour, perfect for simple, nourishing cast iron skillet pancakes.

Garlic scape harvest has begun! For our gardener friends, this means your scapes might be ready too. If they have a curly-cue, they are for sure ready to be harvested, but you can pick them before that too.

Why do we pick the scape? Two reasons: 1) So that the plant's energy can go into making a large garlic bulb instead of flowering. 2) Because the scapes are delish! Substitute 1-2 scapes for 1 clove of garlic in your recipes.
