Faith is braving the rain at Crete Farmers Market today. Besides our tasty pork we have eggs, pumpkins, and tomatoes.

It’s been a very exciting couple of days at Big L Family Farms. Yesterday evening we loaded three farrow to finish heritage hogs for their trip to the locker. When we went out early this morning to head out, we heard the squeals of piglets. Lucy, our half Mangalitsa - half Berkshire gilt from the very first litter we farrowed had three piglets on the ground and more coming. We farrow outside, not in farrowing crates and give the pigs a choice of shelters with hay and straw to farrow in. Lucy, a first time mom, apparently decided to move between two of the sheds and had 2 pigs in one and 1 piglet in the other. We moved them all to the one she was in and I headed out to Wahoo Meats to get the three hogs processed.
Faith came down to check a little later and called me as I was driving away from the locker to tell me Lucy apparently had a pig in the mud between the two. Additionally, one of the other pigs we have wanted to share the shelter with the new mama who was still in labor. She told me to hurry home as she was wading in the mud to save the piglet. Two lost boots later, she had the piglet reunited with mama, chased the interloper out of the shelter and watched two more being born. I got home and put a fence around the “maternity ward” and Lucy finished up. She had a total of 10 pigs with one that unfortunately did not make it. Nine is a great first litter and hopefully she will wean them all.
In addition to all of that, we finished bottling all of the honey (thanks to our daughter Kareleen Kelly who began the process with her husband Chad two weeks ago), moved some baby quail out of the brooder to a grow out pen, and processed all of the surplus male quail.
It’s incredible to see God’s hand at work on our little farm.

Our 2026 honey has been harvested and we now have raw, unfiltered honey at the stand as well as quail, duck, and chicken eggs. Come check it out at SW 84th and W Pioneers Blvd.

Come join us and the rest of the vendors at the Crete Farmers Market from 8:00 to 11:00 today. It’s a beautiful day to get heritage pork, fresh-locally grown produce, flowers, and tasty baked goods.

Come see us at the Crete Farmers Market today from 2:30 to 4:30 and Saturday from 8-11. We will have plenty of heritage pork bacon to go with the lettuce, tomatoes, and bread from the other great vendors. You can't beat a fresh BLT made with bacon that is so much better than what you get at the store!
