158 year old ban lifted — now what?

A federal court just ruled the ban on home distilling unconstitutional 👀. Granted, that sounds pretty big… but this is just the beginning. States still control what happens next and changes THIS BIG take time to roll out.

What’s interesting to us isn’t just the issue of legality… but what this could unlock. So, think of things like hyper-local ingredients, new ideas, and completely new expressions of place.

If this follows anything like the early days of craft beer we might be at the start of something much, much bigger.

Would you craft distill? If you could distill anything… what would you make?

Today is International Whiskey Day - celebrated every year on March 27 and held in honor of Michael James Jackson, the foundationally influential British whisky writer (not the pop star).

The day was founded in 2008 and formally launched in 2009. MJ's birthday is March 27th - hence the date.

Why Michael James Jackson? Many consider him the father of the modern era of whisk(e)y writing. He wrote 16 books starting off writing about beer and pubs in the 1970s. 1989's Malt Whisky Companion was considered his seminal "whisky" work.

Not only is he credited with writing about whisky, he's also credited with giving us the common framework for the way we talk about and evaluate whisky today.

So, if you're home or out and about - raise a wee dram to Michael and to his birthday.

Cheers!

🌟 Kicking off with LA’s original craft pioneer: Greenbar Distillery. Founded by Melkon & Litty, their Slow Hand American Single Malt blends organic barley, six unique woods, and LA’s foodie spirit for a truly innovative sip. Have you tried it yet? Drop your thoughts below! 🥃✨

🥃 We finally made it to Little Wolf — the first American Single Malt–focused whiskey bar in the U.S. (and it’s
right here in Denver ).
We went to celebrate the one-year anniversary of American Single Malt’s official recognition… and
accidentally stayed for three+ hours. That’s what happens when the pours are great, the bottles are wild,
and the people are even better.

The proprietor welcomed us in like regulars, and walked us through some seriously cool bottles and flights. We passed Glencairns around the table, debated nose vs. palate, and pulled out droppers to compare neat vs. diluted aromas.

Flights, friends, rare drams, and zero rush to leave.
10/10 experience. If you’re anywhere near Denver: go to Little Wolf.

We’re genuinely honored to share this.

On January 20th, we’ll be featured guests on the Whiskey Lore Podcast with Drew Hannush — and we couldn’t be more excited for this conversation.

If you’ve spent any time with Drew’s work, you know he doesn’t just talk about whiskey… he listens to it. He follows the back roads. He digs into archives. He seeks out the stories behind the labels — the people, the places, the forgotten chapters that shaped American whiskey long before it was ever “an industry.”

That kind of storytelling is exactly why we built Overland Drams.

Join us for a live conversation about:
• the Santa Fe Whiskey Trail
• American whiskey heritage
• how place, people, and history shape what ends up in the glass
• and why exploring whiskey through story changes the entire experience

Even more special — Whiskey Lore rarely records live episodes, so this is a unique chance to listen in as the conversation unfolds in real time.

If you’re curious about whiskey beyond the label, we’d love to have you there.

Grateful for the opportunity. Excited for the conversation.
"See you on the trail!"

Welcome back to Whiskey Wednesday. This week, its Balcones Texas 1 🥃✨
This week at Overland Drams, we’re diving into the bold world of Texas single malt with Balcones Texas 1.
Crafted from 100% Golden Promise barley and aged in custom American oak barrels under that hot Texas sun, this dram is all about character. Think bright citrus, a touch of funky yeast, rich caramel, and toasted oak. On the palate? Waves of candied orange, black pepper, cinnamon, and malty sweetness.
It’s distinctive. It’s delectable. It’s the kind of pour you savor all evening.
Have you tried Balcones Texas 1? Drop your thoughts below! 👇

Here’s my thoughts on the 2025 Whiskey of the Year…

My top discoveries:
Honorable Mention 1. Balcones Mirador Eclipse – Soft red berries & fruits-of-the-forest magic from
Texas. A total flavor revelation!

Honorable Mention 2: As Above So Below Astrologist – A decadent black currant bomb bourbon. Complex, rare, and sadly discontinued

And finally, my 2025 Whiskey of the Year: Leopold Bros. 9-Year Three Chamber Rye (Batch 2). It’s Ester-heavy bliss with stone fruits, malted sweetness, and a velvet finish that lingers forever. Reviving pre-Prohibition
perfection!

American whiskey is carving out bold new paths in flavor and story. If you’re stuck in Scotch or Kentucky mode, it’s time to explore the Western States! What was your favorite US craft dram in 2025?

Raise a glass to Texas legend! 🥃✨ Balcones Texas 1 American Single Malt celebrates the wild tale of the “Whiskey Bombardment” of Corpus Christi, 1862—when cannon shells hid more bourbon than gunpowder. History, mystery, and a dram worth savoring. Cheers to bold stories and bold flavors!

🎲 Wildcard Whiskey 🥃

This week we’re pulling a wildcard straight from the state of Texas: Balcones Texas 1 American Single Malt Whiskey from Waco.

We chose this bottle because it takes a bold swing — made with Golden Promise barley for a whiskey thats evocative of the Texas frontier.

Instead of us telling you everything, we want to hear from you:

💬 What do you want to know about this whiskey?
Drop your questions below and we’ll weave them into our “research.” 🥃✨

🦃🥃 The West has always run on generosity — and this week, we’re feeling it more than ever.
Every bottle we taste, every distillery we visit, every story we uncover… none of it would be possible without the people who walk this whiskey trail with us.

This Thanksgiving, we’re raising a glass to:
✨ The distillers who open their doors and share their craft
✨ The whiskey explorers who inspire everything we build
✨ Our Founding Santa Fe Trail members who believed in the vision
✨ And this blessed life in the Colorado foothills, where history and whiskey truly meet.

Wherever you celebrate this week — around a crowded table or a quiet campfire — know that we’re grateful for you.

Cheers to all the fellow 🥃 Explorers.
Happy Thanksgiving from Overland Drams. 🤎✨

Whiskey Wednesday is back — and today we’re tasting a whiskey that feels like it timetraveled straight out of the 1800s.

Leopold Bros.’ 9-Year-Old Three Chamber Rye (Batch 2) is the oldest and highest-proof Three Chamber release yet… and honestly, it shows in all the best ways.
Batch 1? Big rye spice.
Batch 2? A whole different story — fruity, floral, estery, and surprisingly elegant on the nose… before the rye spice returns to take the wheel on the palate.
Think stone fruit, licorice, barley sugars, maple, pear/apple pie, then caramel-drizzled bread, black pepper, graham cracker, and black currant bread pudding.
And the finish?
Let’s just say liquid velvet doesn’t even begin to cover it. If this is what pre-Prohibition American whiskey tasted like… we’re all in.
Cheers, friends!
