Sixteen neurons doing math faster than any computer built in the last century. That is what sits behind those enormous eyes. The dragonfly does not react to where the prey is — it solves for where the prey will be, then sends its body to an empty point in the air and waits. The prey flies straight into the trap it never saw coming. Most big predators — lions, sharks, eagles — land somewhere between 20 and 50 percent of their hunts. The dragonfly closes at 90 to 95 percent. Not because it is faster or stronger. Because it thinks in angles and time the way the rest of nature simply does not. What makes this stranger still is the scale. A brain smaller than a grain of rice is running geometry that aerospace engineers use to calculate missile trajectories.
