160 years ago today, Des Moines was connected to a new era.

On August 29, 1866, the first railroad arrived in Des Moines, creating a connection that would help shape the future of Iowa's capital city.

Before the railroad, travel and trade relied heavily on slower routes like rivers and wagon roads. The arrival of rail made it easier to move people, goods, and ideas throughout Iowa and beyond, helping Des Moines grow into the community we know today.

More than a century and a half later, that moment remains an important part of Iowa history, a reminder of how connections and innovation helped shape the places we call home.

Happy Birthday to one of Iowa's most notable figures.

On August 10, 1874, Herbert Hoover was born in West Branch, Iowa. From those small-town beginnings, he went on to become the 31st President of the United States and the first president born west of the Mississippi River.

Before entering the White House, Hoover built a successful career as a mining engineer and became internationally recognized for his humanitarian work, helping provide relief to millions during and after World War I.

Hoover became president in 1929, just months before the stock market crash and the beginning of the Great Depression, one of the most challenging periods in American history.

While his presidency remains a debated part of history, his journey from a small Iowa community to the nation's highest office remains a remarkable part of our state's story.

From West Branch to the White House, Herbert Hoover's story is a reminder of the impact Iowans have had far beyond our state.
