Neffland Farm

This is a group for all people raising poultry in the Detroit Metro Area, as well as people who are interested in supporting local poultry.

We can share ideas, insights, lobby for our rights, and market our products. We can also post when we have chicks and eggs for sale or trade, or collectively order from a hatchery if we have several members interested in a particular breed. Most of all, it will a great place to share our pics and experiences in raising chickens, ducks, geese, and turkey!

Itasca grapes are harvested! Now they will start the process of becoming wine. I feel like I'm sending my kids off to college and they are going to get drunk for the first time.

Today I harvested grapes specifically for wine! The process is fussy, using instruments that have to be calibrated ahead of time, ensuring accurate measurements of sugar and acidity. But once I got readings, I was pleased to see some if the Itasca grapes were ready to be picked.

My cats, Wednesday and Sabrina, caught a grape eating culprit. I was worried about birds, but I never considered mice and rats! All rodents have a tremendous sense of smell and will devour grapes at their peak ripeness. I learned that lesson the hard way with my concord grapes. These cats are saving the farm!

Grape picking anxiety! It's the first big harvest since establishing the vineyard. Dry weather has hurried the ripening process. Birds have descended, forcing me to fashion netting out scraps in the garage. Meters to measure sugar and acidity have been purchased. Timing is crucial, as grapes cease to ripen once off the vine, but commence rotting immediately, necessitating refrigeration. We sell no wine before its time... and we pick from no vine either!

The new mini fridge set up works great! People were able to pick up eggs while I got beat up in a storm on the Mackinac race. (3rd in class, fifth overall in case you were wondering.) The ducks laid a ton while I was gone. There is a new batch of very fresh eggs in the fridge! Let me know if you are interested. $5/half dozen. Easy pickup. Pay with cash, Zelle, or PayPal.

No eggs available this weekend, but there should be plenty next week. I am looking for a mini fridge to make distribution easier. Maintaining a cooler when I'm busy is a bit much... Thanks for understanding!

Two years ago I was inspired to do a live, potted Christmas tree farm. I researched everything like crazy, building the perfect beds, with the perfect medium, and the perfect woven grow bags. Unfortunately, my first one hundred seedlings had a massive failure rate. I was gutted. The moisture was perfect. The PH was perfect, but something went wrong, and I concluded that I soaked the seedlings in water too long before planting.

Once the sting of failure wore off, I decided to try again. Most of the work was in prepping, and that was already done. It wouldn't take much time or expense to plant another one hundred seedlings.

This time the blue spruce were soaked in water between three and six hours before planting, as recommended. The Black Hills spruce were soaked less than three hours due to time constraints. This time all the seedlings are doing great, but especially the Black Hills spruce. Maybe a two hour soak is ideal? But seriously, these spruce started out as 3 inch plugs, and in only two months they already look like tiny Christmas trees. 🌲

Big thanks to everyone who bought eggs for the Memorial Day sale! I am now down to 2 dozen very fresh eggs if anyone is interested. $5/6 very large duck eggs. Let me know and I'll send you PM on pickup and payment. Here's some of my older ducks mowing the grass for me. The vegetation gives the yolks their orange color!
