It’s June 15th and we have our first dahlia harvest! There’s something so special about the first harvest, it fills us with joy and thankfulness. We cherish every single harvest until the very last at first frost. Let the beauty begin!! 🌸🌸

Do you cut or not is the question? I love everything about the texture and complexity of smoke bush. Did you know it makes a great cut flower? It’s a beautiful filler and foliage. When cutting perennials you should cut no more than 1/3 of the plant allowing it to recover.

Can you believe we have dahlias, roses and so much more blooming!?! We just love flowers. What is your favorites? You know, the few that you couldn’t live without? The flower that just makes you smile?

Two perennial crops that we love for cut flowers are Yarrow and Shasta daisies. They continue to self-seed/expand and we have balanced out the harvest time to get the most out of both crops. Our goal is to eventually have around 50% of our farm in perennials to offset some of the labor in annuals.

We are growing dahlias with intention. 😊 Each crop is serving a specific purpose- market bouquets, wholesale and florists, tuber productions and retail. We plan everything from color variations, blooms size, price points and production output to ensure we are working towards the goals.

A lot of flower farmers struggle with the gap between early spring cool season crops and their first summer blooms from their annual heat loving crops. Here at Henningson Farms, we have worked hard to plan so we don’t experience those gaps. We plant out two full 30 x 144 heated tunnels in late fall that provide us with our first blooms starting in April. Our second succession of blooms come from our two 30 x 1 44 tunnels that is unheated. By the time we have exhausted the unheated tunnels, the second flush of flowers are ready in our heated tunnels again. You probably can see the pattern by now. By the time we harvest our second flush from our unheated tunnels, our field crops will be blooming. We haven’t quite perfected all the timing, but we are having success for the most part. Mother nature continues to throw us the occasional curveball, but that’s the beauty of flower farming.
