I want to do this!!!

Forget the plastic playhouses—grow a living "Secret Garden" instead! 🌿📚

Imagine a shaded reading nook that keeps you cool in the summer heat and provides fresh organic produce for dinner. This "Bean Teepee" is the ultimate backyard upcycle: it's a playground, a garden, and a piece of architecture all in one!

Here is how to grow your own backyard getaway:

🏗️ Build the "Skeleton"
Skip the expensive construction and use bamboo poles (or long, sturdy branches from your winter pruning!).

The Footprint: Mark a circle 6–8 feet wide—you want enough room for a bench, a rug, and maybe a small table.

The Frame: Drive 8–10 tall poles into the ground, angling them inward to meet at the center.

The Knot: Tie them securely at the top with twine. This cone shape is incredibly wind-resistant and lets adults stand up inside!

🌱 The Green "Building Materials"
Don't buy "Bush Beans" for this! You need Pole Beans or Runner Beans.

Why? These varieties are born to climb. They’ll race up your bamboo poles in weeks, weaving themselves into a thick, "waterproof" roof of green leaves.

The Entry: Plant seeds heavily at the base of every pole, but remember to leave a 2-foot gap for your "front door." 🚪

🌬️ Natural Air Conditioning
Inside a bean teepee, it can be 10-15 degrees cooler than the rest of the yard!

The Science: The thick leaves block the sun, and the plants actually release moisture (transpiration), creating a natural cooling effect.

The Snack: It’s the only reading nook where you can reach up and grab a fresh, crunchy snack right off the ceiling! 😋🫘

Pro Tip: For a truly magical look, mix in some Scarlet Runner Beans. They grow beautiful bright red flowers that hummingbirds absolutely love! 🌸🛸

A Curved Raised-Bed Garden That Combines Order and Creativity

The image shows a thoughtfully designed garden where curved raised beds form flowing pathways around lush green plantings.
Set in front of a small wooden garden house, this layout blends structure with creativity, transforming a functional growing space into a visually engaging landscape feature.

Curved Beds That Guide Movement
Instead of straight rows, the raised beds follow smooth, sweeping curves that naturally guide movement through the garden.
These shapes create a sense of rhythm and softness, making the space feel welcoming and dynamic.
The curves also improve accessibility, allowing gardeners to reach plants easily from multiple angles without stepping into the soil.
This layout turns the garden into an experience rather than just a growing area.

Wooden Borders for Warmth and Definition
Each bed is framed with low wooden edging that clearly defines planting zones while maintaining a natural appearance. The warm tones of the wood complement the greenery and connect visually with the wooden garden house in the background.
The borders help contain soil, improve drainage, and keep paths clean after watering or rain.
The consistent edging gives the garden a cohesive and intentional look.

Layered Planting for Texture and Balance
A mix of leafy greens and upright plants fills the beds, creating varied textures and heights.
Taller plants near the center act as focal points, while lower, dense foliage along the curves emphasizes the shape of the beds. This layered planting approach enhances visual depth and ensures efficient use of space.
The healthy, evenly spaced plants suggest careful planning and ongoing maintenance.

Clear Paths for Easy Access
Wide soil paths run between the beds, providing comfortable access for planting, harvesting, and maintenance.
These paths prevent soil compaction in the growing areas and make the garden practical for regular use.
The contrast between the dark soil and bright green plants helps the bed shapes stand out clearly.
The layout supports both productivity and ease of care.

A Garden House as a Visual Anchor
The small wooden garden house at the back of the space serves as a visual anchor and practical storage area.
Its simple design reinforces the garden’s natural theme and adds a sense of scale and purpose.
The structure helps frame the garden, making it feel complete and well established.
Surrounding trees and fencing provide privacy and a peaceful backdrop.

A Functional Garden with Artistic Appeal
This curved raised-bed garden demonstrates how thoughtful design can elevate everyday gardening.
By combining flowing shapes, natural materials, and organized planting, the space achieves a balance between efficiency and beauty.

A cool way to plant peas...

In this video, I demonstrate how to grow peas and show the full process including how to build a simple pea structure. Peas are the most wonderful crop and tasting delicious sweet peas straight from the pod, right off the plant, is an experience that I doubt can be improved. This is the simple guide...
