A new 4H season has started. The girls bought their bottle calves this weekend. They are holstein bull calves that came from a local dairy. They will give milk to the calves twice a day for about two months until the calves are eating a growing ration. The calves will be trained to a lead and the girls will show them at the county fair and then auction them off. Cattle prices are so high right now so these calves cost the girls a pretty penny! Hopefully the community will show up to the auction and reward the kids for all their hard work. 4H is a unique opportunity and the kids learn so much about animal husbandry, performance, and marketing/sales. It's hard work and we are proud of the kids for their commitment.

An overdue update: we are finally settled into the new farm and starting to rebuild herds. We've moved away from raising sheep and goats to cattle. I miss them, but life is easier without the neediness of sheep and the antics of goats. Ellie bought herself a dairy heifer "Rosie" who just had her first bull calf in October. We share the responsibility of milking (though I refuse to do early morning milkings) and it's pretty impressive how disciplined she is. Aside from the milk/cream, we've made yogurt, butter, ice cream, and egg nog! We are also growing a beef cattle herd. Our neighbor retired his cattleman hat after a lifetime of great husbandry. We purchased his cattle and hope to honor the efforts he made to develop such fine stock. On the poultry front, we had a great broiler chicken season, but I forgot to order turkeys this year. I made the butcher date, just didn't get the birds. Weird. I suppose it's a break and my other business met the Thanksgiving demand. That's all as an update from the farm.
