That trailer has 43 chickens headed to the processor tonight. It was supposed to be 100 in there. This was the most unsuccessful batch of birds ever and the causes of their death ranged from baffling to ridiculous. The last batch I raised I finished 95/100. Who knows!? I intended to raise 400 this year but I've just gotta call it quits for the season after this failure. Not my typical attitude. will source chickens from multiple farms this summer to compensate for our failure.

A new 4H season has started. The girls bought their bottle calves this weekend. They are holstein bull calves that came from a local dairy. They will give milk to the calves twice a day for about two months until the calves are eating a growing ration. The calves will be trained to a lead and the girls will show them at the county fair and then auction them off. Cattle prices are so high right now so these calves cost the girls a pretty penny! Hopefully the community will show up to the auction and reward the kids for all their hard work. 4H is a unique opportunity and the kids learn so much about animal husbandry, performance, and marketing/sales. It's hard work and we are proud of the kids for their commitment.
