Please help! We have hay bales on the ground ready to be picked up and put into barns. We normally do this task with the skid steer, but our skid steer broke down tonight. We do not have time to fix it before the rain comes tomorrow and ruins all of the hay! Anyone able to come and help stack hay tomorrow, please come. Any time after 7am. Wear pants, gloves, and boots or tennis shoes. We will feed you lunch! Thank you in advance! The nkidsfarm crew

It’s HOT! Taking a 5 minute shade break with my fence partner Honey. She and I are setting up fencing to move the very pregnant sows into some deeper shade so that they can stay cool in this heat. Remember that when it’s super hot and you’re enjoying your air conditioning or relaxing at the lake, livestock farmers are sweating their butts off trying to make sure their animals are comfortable so that you can have healthy meat to eat!

The lovely Claire had her piglets finally. They are all doing well. Claire is a purebred Hereford, and our boar, Mr. President, is a Tamworth. This is a great cross, with fast growing, healthy piglets.

It is currently 10F and I am sitting here with a travel mug of coffee waiting for the lovely Claire to have her piglets. What on earth. This is one of the ridiculous things we farmers do to make sure kids have pigs to show at 4-H and customers have feeder pigs to buy in the spring.

I realized that I never posted on here about our Thanksgiving turkeys. We ARE raising turkeys this year, and they are pastured, gmo-free, no antibiotics or any of that junk, lovely turkeys. We are selling them all through our farm collective to make the record keeping easier. Please visit washtenawmeats to reserve one. They are selling fast.

A pig’s two favorite things: running water and digging with her nose. When you raise pigs on pasture, they get both! Conventionally raised pigs, in barns, on concrete, are not able to express their pig-ness. That is why we raise our pigs in the sunshine, on pasture, where they can roll in water and dig in the mud.
