🇺🇸 Memorial Day Weekend at Five H Farm & Ranch 🇺🇸

A new week… and a fresh beginning here at FHFR. 🌅

Before anything else, this Memorial Day weekend we pause to remember and honor the men and women who gave so much for the freedoms we enjoy every single day.

They gave up their todays for our tomorrows. 🇺🇸

Their sacrifice and the sacrifices carried by so many military families should never be forgotten. We are thankful beyond words and humbled by the price paid for liberty.

Here at the ranch, life keeps moving forward — and maybe that’s part of the lesson too.

After last week’s difficult reminder about how fragile young life can be, we’re choosing to focus on hope, gratitude, and the work still ahead. The chicks and ducklings are settling in, growing fast, and reminding us daily that life has a remarkable way of moving forward. 🐥🦆❤️

And speaking of moving…

🔨 The new coop is making real progress.
We’re getting close now. Very close.
The goal is to have it wrapped up by the end of this week.

Now… whether that means Friday afternoon or midnight Saturday with a flashlight and a few conversations with myself remains to be seen. 😄

🌧️ Drainage and erosion work continues too.
Spring rains have been helpful… and occasionally a little too enthusiastic. Around here, water always seems to have its own engineering opinion.

🚜 The flail mower is standing by patiently while the weather decides whether we’re allowed to mow anything meaningful this week. Hopefully sunshine joins the conversation soon.

🫏 KC and Sunshine remain away at the breeders enjoying a little “vacation romance.” We sure miss seeing those girls every day and look forward to having them back home soon.

🐄 The Highlands are still sorting out the social politics surrounding Skye. She’s settling in nicely, though the welcoming committee has remained… professionally skeptical. 😄

And just wait until the herd realizes another Highland heifer arrives in mid-June.

That should be interesting. 😂

🐔 The mature hens are doing wonderfully and continue running daily operations like seasoned executives. One can only wonder if they realize a rooster is about to enter the organizational chart.

🐥 The chicks are growing like weeds.

🦆 And goodness gracious… Pekin ducks are something else entirely.
At only three weeks old, Ducky and Ziva are already nearly four times their arrival size. Impossible to explain unless you see it yourself.

🍑 Late spring harvest has officially begun too.

Blackberries.
Tomatoes.
Peaches.

Now that is one of the great rewards of this season. 🌿☀️

And of course…

🐶 The pups continue their faithful work as supervisors, inspectors, companions, and occasional mud specialists. Hard to imagine ranch life without them.

It’s a busy season.
A thankful season.
And a season full of growth.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.

Remember those who gave everything. 🇺🇸
And as always…

God Bless.

Another full week at Five H Farm & Ranch.

Spring has officially shifted into full ranch mode around here. Most of the seasonal backhoe work is finally behind us, and the tractor made the transition over to the flail mower. Around East Texas, that means one thing… the smiley vine has declared war on every tree line on the property. 🌿🚜

The lawns, barn areas, and pastures are all demanding attention too. (And yes… the smaller tractor absolutely earns its keep this time of year.)

We made some real progress on drainage this week, though there is still plenty left to do. Truthfully, there is always more to do on a ranch. That’s just part of the life — and honestly, part of the blessing.

Lots of fur and feather news this week as well.

For the first time in two years, our Jennies left the ranch for a little “boyfriend time.” 🫏❤️ We sure miss seeing them every day already, but hopefully in about 14 months we’ll have some little long-eared babies running around FHFR.

Skye is continuing to settle into the herd. She’s still the “new girl,” so integration hasn’t been perfect yet, but every day gets a little better. The new 250-pound protein tub arrived this week and instantly became the most popular item on the ranch. 🐮😂

The pups are doing great and remain our constant shadows and faithful companions. Hard to explain how much those dogs mean around here. Always thankful for their unwavering friendship. 🐾

The big hens had a little excitement this week after discovering a racer snake in the coop area. Thankfully, racers are non-venomous, though they are excellent climbers and definitely enjoy eggs a little too much. We safely relocated him to the far side of the lake. Hopefully he enjoys his new waterfront property and decides to stay there. 🐍

This week also carried a heavier moment for us. We laid the 14 baby chicks and ducklings we lost to rest in the east pasture. That was a hard one. But life on a ranch teaches you both joy and heartbreak sometimes arrive together.

The good news is the new chicks are doing very well, and work continues on the new coop and run every chance we get. We’re hoping to have everything ready for the growing flock by the end of the month. 🐥

And at least for now… the two surviving ducklings are officially named Ziva and Ducky. 🦆❤️

Summer is almost here in East Texas. The grass is growing faster than we can cut it, projects are stacking up, and the days are getting longer.

Wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

God Bless, and have a great week.
