January. Winter. Eggs are few & far between. If you don’t have chickens, you might not know they lay based on a cycle. With the daylight. So in winter, when the days are shorter, the eggs are less. ⁣
⁣
Eggs were historically seasonal before modern breeding & artificial light. Its natures little break. But we are rounding the winter corner & eggs are picking back up. Nature signals. Spring is closer. 🍳

A flower that I didn’t grow for 2 seasons is coming back! Gomphrena.⁣
⁣
The cutest little bouncy balls that work great fresh & dried. ⁣
⁣
They tend to have pretty floppy tops so make sure you are harvesting at the correct stage- when the stem is stiff. Another note- they can be a real pain to harvest so keep that in mind if you are considering these. ⁣
⁣
Less is also more. I’ve found you might not need that row of 500 plants. Each plant yields LOADS of flowers. ⁣
⁣

Larkspur! Seeds were planted in trays about 2 weeks ago. & moved to my cooler. In the dark & about 38°F. ⁣
⁣
They like a cold start. This is called cold stratification. Basically, I am faking winter. The seeds are sort of dormant in the cold and when we bring them out into the warmth, it signals them to wake up.⁣
⁣
In nature, this would be like seeds that fell in the Fall and sat on the cold ground until early spring wakes them up. Larkspur even grows in Alaska, so really no cold is too cold for them! ⁣
⁣
The trays are now in my unheated greenhouse, ready to wake up. I will transplant them out with no protection and have blooms by June! Do you grow larkspur? ⁣

It’s colddddd. Winter finally showed back up. & I’m actually thankful. It was way too warm for awhile. Let’s go check the plants!⁣

First up, the greenhouse. Which isn’t heated but does have some greenhouse space heaters going. They are linked on Amazon, Palma heaters. All my seed trays are on heat mats, this keeps them warm enough on cold nights. ⁣
⁣
The big high tunnel. Delphinium, Icelandic poppies, anemones & ranunculus are in here. I only peeked at the ranunculus & anemones. They all look great under frost cloth even with the air being 19F 🥶⁣
⁣
Tomorrow- look for a post about my must haves to get your crops through winter. With protection. ⁣
⁣
Plants are tough. With the right help to get them through winter, they will thrive!

It’s not a rose & it’s not a carnation (GASP). I get the eye twitch when I’m asked that.. anyway. It’s Lisianthus — & trust me it’s worth the wait. Worth the weight 🤍⁣

They sureeeee take their sweet time. With seeds being notoriously slow to germinate, I opt to start with plugs from farmerbaileyplugs . There are some crops you just don’t want to wait on & for me, it’s lisi. I don’t have the patience to check for germination a month from now!! Plugs never fail. ⁣
⁣
Where to grow them? I’ve grown them both in the high tunnel and out in the field in raised beds and surprisingly, they’ve actually performed better outdoors for me. Stronger plants, better stems. ⁣
⁣
Now, the question this season is where will I make room for them. The jury is out. It’s a toss up. Do I take away several beds of dahlias to make room for lisi or do I try in the tunnel again? Or maybe in the field? I haven’t decided yet but my plugs don’t come until March, so I’ve got time 😈⁣

Sometimes the slowest growers end up being the most rewarding.

Overwintering flowers in an unheated hoop house really comes down to just two things 👇⁣
⁣
1️⃣ Support poles⁣
This is non-negotiable. They keep your frost cloth lifted off the crops so it doesn’t weigh them down, break stems, or trap too much moisture right on the foliage. Think low tunnels inside your tunnel.⁣
⁣
2️⃣ Frost cloth⁣
Not all frost cloth is created equal. The “number” tells you how much protection it gives. ⁣
⁣
Heavier = More Warmth: Higher ounce counts mean thicker fabric, trapping more heat.⁣
⁣
Lighter = More Light: Lighter cloths allow more sunlight to pass through. ⁣
⁣
Can you layer for more protection? YES! ⁣
⁣
Most of my overwintering success comes from layering the right weight cloth over supports. & I do a lot of double layering. Don’t underestimate the power of frost cloth!! ⁣

All in all we saw 9-10” in most spots we measured, but the snow drifts are wild!! ⁣
⁣
17” in front of my tunnel halfway up the door. ⁣
⁣
Dug out the door. The gothic shape has the snow rolling right off the top. Luckily, no ice here!! ⁣
⁣
The snow is way up the sides, I’ve got the roll up sides turned off so we don’t break a motor should the sun come out.⁣
⁣
We are supposed to be in teens or single digits all week. Wind chills in the negatives. All my plants are under 4 layers of frost cloth & all my fingers are crossed. Snow is an insulator, hope it’s insulating them!! The low was 2 so far & the current temp was 24F. Come on Mother Nature!!

We are still deep in winter weather over here. Negative nighttime lows. Teen highs. All my seeds & seedlings just germinating were in my greenhouse. Unheated!! Just 3 little space heaters. They would have been toast. ⁣
⁣
So the night before the big storm I carried all the trays inside. Back to the place I used to start my winter seeds. My basement! Tucked all the trays on shelves under shop lights. It’s been a week & they are all THRIVING. ⁣
⁣
These are your spring snapdragons!!! Also growing: more snapdragons, delphinium, larkspur & stock. ⁣
⁣
I know you’ll ask: shop lights. The kind from your local hardware shop. The kind you might have in your garage already.
