🚨 URGENT: Disease alert — EHV-1 (Neurologic) confirmed. Horse owners and caretakers, please read and share!

A confirmed case of Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) — the neurologic form of EHV-1 — has been reported at a horse show in Culpeper County, Virginia.

A 21-year-old Thoroughbred gelding competing at a show developed clinical signs on April 17, 2026, including lethargy, lower-limb swelling, and sudden-onset ataxia (loss of coordination). The horse has since been euthanized. This information has been confirmed by a university clinician, a private practitioner, and Virginia's State Animal Health Official.

⚠️Quarantine (as of April 20, 2026) — 42 horses may have been exposed, and are now under a state-mandated 2-week quarantine at their home farms, in areas that will not expose other horses.

EHV-1 is a highly contagious herpesvirus spread through direct horse-to-horse contact, respiratory secretions, and contaminated equipment or hands. For more information about EHV-1 and updates on this case, please visit the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) website.

📍 If you have concerns about your horses or need to report illness, contact the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) or your primary care veterinarian immediately.

Bird ran,on last count, over 92 recognized HT and raced in Canada before becoming an eventer. He retired from eventing career caring his last YR to area II championships at The Maryland Horse Trials at the age of 26, where they did an amazing retirement ceremony. Now 28, he is enjoying his much deserved R&R with some
magnetic and red light therapy. Yes!!! he retired sound but old age (speaking from experience) does come with aches and pain. So we keep him extra happy so he can continue to destroy blankets with Buddy🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️😂🦊

❤️ Little girls and horses…
It’s never just a childhood phase.
It’s the start of a foundation for life.

Horses don’t just teach riding.
They teach patience when nothing clicks.
Responsibility when stalls must be cleaned before play.
Grit when a stubborn pony refuses to cooperate.

They show that trust isn’t given...it’s earned.
Through consistency.
Through respect.
Through time.

Every little girl who swings a leg over a horse learns:
Falling doesn’t mean failing.
It means getting up, dusting off, and trying again.

Discipline isn’t punishment...it’s commitment.
Kindness isn’t weakness...it’s strength.
Confidence isn’t being loud....it’s showing up, even when you’re scared.

Horses shape little girls into women who don’t quit when life gets hard.
Women who know sweat and sacrifice come before reward.
Women who carry themselves with grace,
but aren’t afraid to dig in and fight when it matters.

It’s the 6 a.m. feedings.
The cold winter rides.
The tears after tough lessons,
and the laughter after small victories.

It’s brushing a horse in the quiet of the barn,
realizing responsibility never takes a day off.

So yes…
little girls may grow out of braids and pony bows.
But they never outgrow the lessons their horses taught them.

And maybe that’s the greatest gift of all.

As science advances, we are answering previously unanswerable questions. We are also disproving previously widely held beliefs.

It was once “common knowledge” that Thoroughbreds were descended from Arabians, but we now know that is not true.

While the breed's three foundation sires - The Byerley Turk, Darley Arabian and Godolphin Arabian - were brought from the Middle East and believed to be Arabian or Barb, genetic studies suggest otherwise. The Darley Arabian and Godolphin Arabian were most likely Turkoman horses, an ancient breed that influenced the modern Akhal-Teke.

Thoroughbreds have insignificant Arabian DNA markers in their genome. In fact, Thoroughbred DNA actually appears more frequently in modern Arabian lines, which means that the Thoroughbred influenced the Arabian, not the other way around.
