"Humus is the Latin word for earth (a rich and nutrient-filled soil) and is also the root word for human. Humility is derived from the same word, humilitas, one who is grounded or near to the earth. Fittingly, the second creation story tells us that humans were created from the earth, soil, humus and given God’s breath of life."

"The LORD God formed man out of the clay of the ground

and blew into his nostrils the breath of life,

and so man became a living being."

— Genesis 2:7

"By the sweat of your face

you shall eat bread

until you return to the ground,

for out of it you were taken;

you are dust,

and to dust you shall return."

— Genesis 3:19

I always love watering in the first run. Something exciting when the organic breakdown starts. The grindings are typical already in mesophilic breakdown. We'll get some extra water going to ensure a proper amount. Soon the big tractor will mix it all together. When thermophilic breakdown occurs the pile will hit 160 degrees. Several turnings ensure proper air distribution and moisture content. This will be great compost one day. We will screen it to make our amazing PH neutral, high fertility soil. Check out the difference love for soil makes in our Wahtoke Farms product line.

Here's a quick thought for making Inoculated Biochar and how to apply it. First you make char. Then you inoculate it. Finally you apply it and water in. It then releases all in bioactivity and valuable carbon back into your soil. Try Wahtoke Biochar infused with Worm tea (worm castings, kelp meal, alfalfa meal,)

Do you need Biochar? You may not have heard of Biochar but it's becoming a very popular way to add beneficial aspects to your garden. Its primary function is to improve soil health and structure, acting as a stable carbon sink that can enhance soil fertility and water retention. Biochar's porous structure creates habitat for beneficial soil microorganisms, which promotes plant growth and increases crop yields. It acts like a sponge, holding onto nutrients and preventing them from leaching away, which reduces the need for chemical fertilizers and leads to more sustainable agriculture. By converting biomass into a stable, long-lasting form of carbon, biochar removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, making it a key tool for carbon removal. Its sponge-like properties help soil hold more moisture, which is beneficial in dry or depleted soils.
