👻 I know it’s spooky season… but please don’t ghost your breeder.
Ghosting has become way too common in the livestock industry. Someone reaches out interested in animals, says they want several, schedules a time to come look, or even sets a pickup date… and then disappears.
Here’s the thing: changing your mind is completely okay.
Maybe you found an animal somewhere else. Maybe your budget changed. Maybe your plans changed. Maybe it just wasn’t the right fit.
Just send the text.
A quick, “Hey, we decided to go another direction,” is all it takes. Most breeders understand that not every inquiry turns into a sale, and nobody expects buyers to follow through if circumstances change.
The problem is when there’s no communication at all.
Livestock has a limited marketing window. While a breeder is waiting to hear back, they may be holding animals, turning away another buyer, rearranging their weekend, making sure someone is available for an appointment, or delaying other plans because they believe a sale or pickup is still happening.
And beyond the business side of it, it can be genuinely discouraging. Breeders put an enormous amount of time, money, work, and pride into raising and marketing these animals. Being left hanging repeatedly is frustrating and, frankly, disrespectful.
This applies across the industry — sheep, cattle, goats, pigs, poultry, and everything in between. Professionalism and courtesy should go both ways.
Plans change. People change their minds. That’s normal.
Communication is the part that matters.
A 30-second text can save someone hours or days of wondering, waiting, and planning.
So if you’re no longer interested, just say so.
No hard feelings. Just don’t ghost your breeder. 👻
