Today we sent our first group of finished cattle to Pennsylvania. It was a full circle moment as every single one of these cattle were not only home raised, but the first calves we ever had born on the farm. Every single one of these cows helped us learn and grow right along with them. So much gratitude is felt for them as they leave knowing they are headed to become beef/byproducts to feed and supply the world!

p.s. you know you have well minded cattle when the trucker stops and asks “what are these, pets?” 🙃

This year we made the decision to grow corn silage for the cows and thanks to Richlands Dairy we were able to fill our bunks this week! Corn silage is a very popular feed for all ages of cattle for its high nutritional value. It’s easily digestible and the cows LOVE it in a TMR. It contains all of the corn plant - stalks, cobs, leaves, and kernels. Once the bunks are packed we cover it with plastic, which allows the silage to ferment. After about 3 weeks we can begin feeding.

Now that harvest and calving season are complete on the farm we had just a few minutes to catch our breath and spend some time with family for the holiday and then it’s back to work! Our first calving season definitely had some challenges but we were able to learn and will be prepared for the future! Our herd this year were all heifers meaning they had not yet given birth to a calf. Watching almost all of them have a calf without any assistance and immediately play the role of a mother was an incredible experience. Now it’s time to start planning to breed the cows to do it all over again! This year we are excited to be working with Select Sires to AI our herd. This allows us to use better genetics to improve the performance of our herd. We also have many other exciting things happening with the cattle company that I can’t wait to share 🙂

We are very excited to welcome another group of heifers to the farm! These girls are actually sisters to our original herd. They have been artificially inseminated and will calve with the rest this fall 🙂

Welcome to CFCC, I recently graduated from NC State majoring in General Agriculture in order to come back to my family farm in Dinwiddie County to help it grow for future generations. One way in doing that is diversifying our farm and adding beef cattle to our existing grain operation. We currently are raising black angus heifers to which we will breed this winter. I’m very excited to share this journey and can’t wait to see where the future leads!
