A few weeks ago, we headed to University of Massachusetts Amherst to share Spare Burger and Spare Beef with students on campus 🍔🥕

Considering is home to the #1 ranked college dining program in the country, we knew expectations would be high. So hearing students talk about how much they enjoyed Spare? We’ll definitely take that as high praise!

Perhaps the only thing better than eating at is feeding the people behind it. When we were invited to join a small group of alum to cater their annual staff party at , we jumped at the opportunity.

We set up a build-your-own burger bar, and for three hours, served Spare Burgers hot off the grill to a crowd of cooks, servers, farmers, educators, and their families — and the line never quit from the moment the event began. (Given the audience, that was certainly high praise!)

It’s truly always so special being back at the place that is such an essential part of our origin story.

Long before “sustainability” was part of everyday conversation, Rachel Carson helped spark a global awareness of how human systems impact the natural world.

That awareness grew into movements, and eventually, a closer look at something we all participate in every day: the food system. At Spare, that’s where we choose to focus. Not by reinventing what people eat, but by making it a little better.

This Earth Day, we’re serving up Spare Burgers at the University of California, Santa Cruz — home of Rachel Carson College — making our work feel a bit like full-circle moment.

🌎When we talk about making impact at scale, we mean working with partners like & , the first university campus to make Spare their default choice for burgers and ground beef.

🌿Check out what they prepared and served for lunch at dining hall on Friday with our product (after a quick Spare Food training session.)

🍽️On the menu:

👍Empanada and tamale bar
👍Wanja-Jeon Bowls (Korean fried beef patties)
👍Twice baked potato shepherd’s pies
👍Meatloaf “cupcakes”

👩🏽‍🍳Culinary creativity, respect for global food traditions, and a deep desire to feed students healthier, more eco-friendly food fueled a lunch service powered by Spare.

🌍Thank you to the incredibly talented Vandy chefs for inviting us into their kitchens and dining rooms and demonstrating us what positive change looks and tastes like!
