Friday September 19th, John and I attended the sentencing for the man who repeatedly stole from our honor-system farm store. I read the statement that many of you helped shape through your support, and I want to thank our community again for rallying behind us.

In court, the man passed the blame to his accomplice, claiming she told him it was a “pay what you want” store. He also stood there and said he was a changed man, turning his life around. But his words were full of contradictions.

If he truly thought our store was “pay what you want,” why did he wait until customers left before coming inside? Why did he watch others pay before taking items himself? Why did he speed off dangerously—nearly hitting me and another car—when confronted? If he honestly believed it was a charity store, why would he say he “wouldn’t do this again”?

He is on 3 years monitored probation, on the Illinois side, he is ordered to pay back his portion of the theft. His accomplice will be standing trial soon. The judge was surprised why he would steel from our store when he obviously had enough money. He didn't say what he did with the meat.

Our community knows the truth. He wasn’t confused. He took advantage of the trust this community holds dear. While justice has now run its course, I hope this serves as a reminder of how strong our community is when we look out for one another.

Many of you have been asking about whether the thief from October 2024 has been caught. Just letting you know that he has been found guilty (surprise) and he will be sentenced in September. We have been asked to attend the sentencing. We plan on making a victim's statement. We know how he affected us and our employees, but as our customers, how did it affect you. Please let us know so we can add it to our our statement.
