KZ Autumn Gala - my friend Paula gave me a tuber of this because she knows I try to grow a lot of midwest intros. I couldn't find a picture or information about it so I had no idea what I'd get, but I planted it anyway. Let me tell you, getting surprised by a dahlia you had zero anticipation for is an awesome thing! The color on it is spectacular! It's kinda like Mission Gypsy in that you really can't capture the true depth or uniqueness to the color in photos. You have to see it for yourself! Thanks Paula for the wonderful surprise!

If singles under 2" are called mignon singles, should singles over a certain size get a special name too? This is Baron Big Jim. It's 5.5" in diameter. It's a massive single in my book!

I've only dabbled a bit with hand pollination. It's a lot of work and my to do list is long. Also I try not to be outside much in the middle of the day and that is when pollen is most readily available. My seed quality improvement strategy involves planting like forms with like forms and dahlias I'd like to cross next to each other and then letting the pollinators do the work. Will this low effort strategy ever produce a dahlia people fall in love with? I don't know. Maybe. What I do know is I really love this second year kinda stellar/kinda informal dec seedling. I might name it 'Robert Smith's Hair'. 🖤
