It’s so wonderful to see your plans working.

One of our plans on the farm has been to bred a sturdy dual purpose goat.

We love our Nubians, but as far as true dual purpose we feel they’ve been pushed to the dairy side more.

Before we got our Kiko buck (meat breed) we had a half Nubian half boer doe on the farm.

We’ve slowly been adding more milky genes and I couldn’t be more impressed with Dolly, compared to her horned 1/2 Boer mother she had more depth and a better udder.
Last season she milked like a dream and didn’t hold back, she’s also got such a sweet temperment I can milk her right in the field.

She kidded a beautiful white spotted doeling on Halloween and we’re thrilled to see how she progresses on her second freshening!

My darling girl Ella gave us two sweet nigerian Nubian crosses that are cute as buttons!

Breeding season started sooner and very different than planned, but playing with baby goats all morning makes up for a lot!

So far I think the little girl is polled, so that’s a bonus too!

In a bit of good news, we had our first polled kid on the farm, with blue eyes to boot.

Not good, this kid wasn’t planned, but I had a Nigerian dwarf who, the day before going to his new farm, get into the barn with the girls.

Someone said Nigerian Dwarves are Chaotic Evil, and I believe them. We sent Spartacus to a new farm because he was always getting where he shouldn’t be.

Where there’s a will there’s a way I guess.

Say hello to this cute Nigerian Dwarf/ Nubian cross.

Taking suggestions on spooky Halloween names!

This morning is magical.I hope you all get some time to enjoy the cool weather while it’s here.💗

Busy season on the farm, right now we’re busy making sure everyone has cool water shade.
Garden is growing, not everything I had hoped. Ducks are fat, but no eggs.

I fall prey to “never good enough” and sometimes have to remind myself that it doesn’t all have to be done right this moment.

A farm to-do is never done, but a cool evening walk makes it pretty easy to find some peace.

Realized I hadn’t posted about the cows in a minute!

Nora decided to give us a little mini version of her, in bull form.
Greta also gave us a bull calf.
Moira gave us a big black heifer Clara named Elinor (after her fav pbs show)

The calves are so funny but very shy, and as usually our farm chores have halted from the rain, we’ve got to put in a new fence but the ground won’t dry up.

A huge thank you to Southern 22 Kikos for letting us bring this guy home.

Kikos have been on our radar for years but meat goats don’t usually get health screened, but we lucked out with this guy!
Our goal with him is to work towards a milk and meat homestead goat.

Welcome to the farm, Cujo!

You know what irritates me more than trying to keep the milk stand clean on a rainy day?

Baby goats ruining perfect udders!

It took Buttercup 3 freshenings to get that wonderful Nubian udder, and even though I bottle raised one of her triplets, her two remaining kids only eat on one side.😖
And OF COURSE I didn’t manage to get a photo of her udder in prime because of the rain and the stomach flu running through our house.

Not to mention she holds milk back like a champ when I get her on the stand.

A similar thing happened with Ella two years ago and you can still see where one teat hangs a little lower.

I get why people bottle raise now, I can’t commit to doing that yet, I like the idea of goats taking care of their babes, but I’m getting close. 🙄
