I may not know how to do a full face of makeup…

But I can operate a tractor, bale hay, ride horses, build fence, and help a horse give birth.

I’ll take dirt on my boots over high heels any day. There’s something rewarding about working hard, caring for animals, and building a life with your own two hands.

Farm girls may not fit every stereotype, but we’re pretty capable of getting things done.

It’s official! Darla has been sold and was picked up by her new owners this morning.

She headed straight to a trainer to begin 90 days of training. Her new owners plan to get her started under saddle, enjoy her as a riding horse, and potentially lease her to local 4-H kids in the future.

I’m beyond excited to watch her progress and see her thrive in her new home!

Some of you may be wondering why we decided to sell Darla. When we purchased her, our goal was to breed her and hopefully produce a couple of keeper fillies to incorporate back into our breeding program. She has fantastic bloodlines, a sharp mind, and a nice build—everything we were looking for in a broodmare prospect.

Unfortunately, we invested several thousand dollars trying to breed both Darla and Red through frozen-semen AI this year, and neither mare ended up pregnant. To help offset some of those expenses, we made the difficult decision to sell one of our horses, and Darla was the mare we chose.

Of all our mares, Darla required the most time and consistent handling to continue developing into a well-rounded horse. To be fair, she has come leaps and bounds since we brought her home, but I simply didn’t have the extra time she deserved to continue her progress.

While it’s always bittersweet to say goodbye, I truly couldn’t be happier with where she’s going. I believe she has all the potential in the world to become exactly what her new owners are hoping for, and I can’t wait to follow along on her journey.

❤️ Good luck, Darla. We can’t wait to see what your future holds!

Despite the heat, humidity, and random rain showers, my husband and I decided to keep working on our new stallion paddock today. We got 3 more posts set, though 2 of them took a little extra work since we had to square them up with the horse shelter posts that were already in the ground. The third post was a support post for the gate.

We still have around 10 more posts to set and fencing to string, but it’s finally starting to come together. Once that’s done, we’ll be able to start using the pen!

I’m really excited to have yet another project checked off our to-do list.

I just love my roan babies! Once they start shedding that soft foal coat, they hit the “moldy cheese” stage where those funny little patchy spots start peeking through as their roan coloring finally begins to come in. 😂

I think Mulberry is going to end up being a lighter colored bay roan just like her momma, and I’m so excited to watch her color continue to change as she grows! Roans are always so fun because you never fully know what shade they’re going to settle into until they start shedding out - and even then, they change colors with the seasons. 💙

🍀Edit: SOLD🍀

We have officially decided to sell our mare Darla.

Aka - MF Pepto Misty Baby
2019 AQHA registered grulla roan mare

Darla was checked open a couple days ago and is in heat now, making this a great opportunity for someone wanting to get her bred this season. She should be ready to breed now.

✔️ AQHA Registered
✔️ 6 panel negative
✔️ Parentage verified
✔️ Up to date on shots and Coggins
✔️ Pasture raised and lives well outdoors
✔️ Boss mare in the herd, but not aggressive
✔️15-15.1 hands tall

Darla has never been broke to ride and is best suited for someone experienced with horses and willing to continue working with her. She can be timid with people at first and has a stubborn streak at times, but she is a sweet mare overall. She’s never offered to kick or bite, and has only reared up once trying to get away from the “scary” horse trailer when i was introducing her to loading into the trailer.

We attempted frozen AI with her once this year. To our knowledge, prior to us owning her she was only live covered.

She does have a few quirks:
• Occasionally balks when loading into the trailer (but stands well once in)
• Not the easiest for farrier work, though she has been improving with consistent handling

She is a beautiful mare with a lot of potential as a broodmare prospect for someone looking to add color and quality to their program OR an eventual riding partner if you want to invest the time to break her out.
To my knowledge she is sound to break out, but PPE’s are welcome at buyers expense.

A little update on our blue roan draft cross c**t, Banks… 💙

When he was first born, he was actually pretty friendly and curious about people. But one day my daughter was petting him through the electric fence and he accidentally got zapped. After that, he became super cautious and started associating human contact with getting shocked.

Lately though, he’s been warming back up to us and remembering why he liked people in the first place — all the scratches! 😉 He’s becoming more friendly by the day and absolutely loves a good body scratch session.

And this boy is already BIG… especially considering he’s not even two months old yet!

I took Red and Darla to the vet this morning to check and see if they were in foal to Shining C Chrome. Unfortunately, both mares checked open and are currently cycling. If we wanted to breed them right now, they’d both be ready within the next couple of days.

After a lot of thought, we’ve decided we will not be doing any more AI breedings this year. We have several thousand dollars wrapped up in trying to get these two mares bred, and unfortunately nothing came of it this season.

The plan now is to live cover a few of our own mares once Captain comes home from the stallion station. We personally only live cover our own mares because we know our mares, we know our stallions, and we know how they handle together. My husband also built a breeding chute that helps keep mares from fidgeting or kicking if they’re feeling a little froggy. Our girls generally stand very well, but we take safety seriously for the handler, the mare, and the stallion.

Because we are unfamiliar with how visiting mares may react, we do not offer live cover to the public. Client mares are only offered on-site AI or cooled shipped semen so everybody stays as safe as possible.

To say I’m bummed neither of our mares are in foal is an understatement, but sometimes that’s just the way things go. Breeding horses is definitely not for the faint of heart, and it certainly is not cheap.

With how expensive fertilizer has gotten, we decided it was time to invest in another piece of equipment so we can spread our own natural fertilizer — horse manure — on the hay fields instead of spending a fortune on pelleted fertilizer every year.

My mom and I drove almost two hours one way to pick this beast up. The drive there was no problem… but hauling it home on I-94 for most of the trip? That was a different story 😅 We had that manure spreader fastened down really well, but I was still super nervous the entire way home. Let’s just say I was white knuckling the steering wheel and checking the mirrors every five seconds praying everything stayed where it was supposed to!

But hey — one more piece of equipment added to the farm, and one more step toward being a little more self-sufficient. 🚜
