129 years ago tonight, Dowagiac was buzzing with excitement. It was New Year’s Eve and Fred and Kate (Beckwith) Lee were hosting a party in their newly completed home, The Rockery, on High Street. Carriages from around the city converged upon the Richardson Romanesque style mansion which was ablaze with electric lights (fairly new at the time). This home stands today as a reminder of the Gilded Age in Dowagiac.

Many thanks to Corey Crocker for his never-ending committment to preserving history and Jonathan Weupper at the Cass District Library Local History Branch for finding the original newspaper article for us.
