In the heart of Abruzzo, nestled between the Gran Sasso and Maiella mountains with the cooling breezes of the Adriatic billowing through the town of Pietranico. Agricola Caprera was born from a vision of ecological harmony. Founded in 2012 by Luca Paolo Virgilio and Alfonso, the estate isn’t just a winery; it’s a 22-hectare “agricultural organism” designed to thrive as a self-sustaining ecosystem of vineyards, olive groves, cereals, and wild woodland.
The story began in Pietranico, a location steeped in ancient history where prehistoric rock basins, or vasche, are still carved into the landscape, reminders of a winemaking tradition that predates modern memory. After acquiring the land in 2012, the team spent two years preparing the soil and restoring the biodiversity of the site before planting their first hectares of Montepulciano and Trebbiano in 2014, with cuttings obtained from the vineyards of Emidio Pepe.
At an elevation of 400 meters, the vines dig into a complex mix of limestone, blue clay, and marl. This unique soil composition, combined with a windswept climate, allows Caprera to produce wines with a signature freshness and structural elegance, often denser and more round than expected given that the estate forgoes the use of new wood in aging.
In the cellar, the philosophy is one of radical transparency and minimal intervention. Since their first official vintage in 2018, Agricola Caprera has focused on natural winemaking: spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts and a refusal to filter. The result is a collection of wines that are pure, unadorned reflections of their piece of wild Abruzzese landscape.
