Fun facts about Farm Fresh Eggs & Chickens

Eggs are laid with a protective layer called “bloom” that seals the pores on the egg to keep bacteria from entering.

Unwashed eggs can stay on the counter for several weeks.

Washed eggs must be refrigerated and last up to two months.

Store your eggs upside down to help keep them fresh (pointy side down).

Chickens are omnivores. They love bugs, frogs, snakes, mice and other small creatures along with all kinds of vegetation.

Chickens shouldn’t have potato skins.

Farm eggs have 1/3 less cholesterol,1/4 less saturated fat, 2/3 more vitamin A, Two times more omega-3 fatty acids and three times more vitamin E than store bought eggs.

You can tell if the egg is fertilized by there being a white “bullseye” on the yolk.

One egg can have as many as 17,000 pores on the shell.

The breed of the chicken will determine the color of the egg.

The yolks contain vitamin D.

Chickens run faster than humans.

They can also remember up too 100 faces.

Chicken math is real.

We added 18 pullets & 1 cockerel to our flock this past spring. I have a very nice variety of chickens & of course, egg colors 🥰. There's EE's, OE's, Buff Orpingtons, Wheaton Ameraucana, Salmon Favorelle, Mars Bar, BCM's, Lt. Brahma's, Cream split Legbar hens & Bielefelder rooster 🐓!!! I'm in love with them all! They've grown & all pretty much laying now. Here's some pics of most of them. Thanks goes out to: The Back 40 Acres, LLC , White Oak Acres Homestead, Lauren Kueber & Dawn Michelle Smith for the hatching eggs, pullets & cockerel ❤️

Since adding more pullets to my flock in the spring, I knew the "OG's" pen & the "Grow-outs" pen needed more room. So I bought a new pen & adapted it by adding more fencing to connect the two pens together (making a 20' x 20' pen). They each have a small door to get into the "playpen" when it's their turn to run & play. They get locked back up in their pens/coops every evening. It took me 4 days in this scorching heat & humidity this week to construct this pen! Hope they appreciate it! 🥵 Pic of set-up in Comments.

How wonderful...found a broody hen hidden with 19 eggs buried under & around her!!! All wasted & dirty!! Ugh!!!😫😠😳🙄 I really didn't need this in this heatwave!! She doesnt like me right now. She had a whole variety of color eggs too. So it was a collaboration 🤔!!!

AMAZING FACTS ABOUT CHICKEN

1. Chickens are surprisingly intelligent. They can recognize over 100 faces of their flockmates and even humans. They also have complex communication systems, using different calls for warnings, food discoveries, and more.

2. They dream, just like us. Chickens experience REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, which suggests they might dream!

3. A mother hen talks to her chicks before they're hatched. She clucks softly, and the chicks chirp back from inside the eggs, building a bond before they even meet.

4. Chickens are great at math (well, sort of). Studies show they can count and even perform basic addition or subtraction tasks.

5. The world has more chickens than humans. With over 33 billion chickens on Earth, they far outnumber us.

6. Chickens have unique personalities. Just like humans, some are bold and adventurous, while others are shy or cautious.

7. They're descendants of dinosaurs. Chickens are closely related to the mighty T. rex. That drumstick on your plate? It's basically a tiny dino leg!

8. Chickens can feel empathy. Mother hens show concern for their chicks, displaying signs of distress if their babies are in danger.

9. They can run fast. A chicken can sprint up to 9 miles per hour (14 kilometers per hour) when motivated.

10. Egg color depends on the hen's breed. White-feathered chickens with white earlobes lay white eggs, while brown-feathered chickens with red earlobes lay brown eggs. There are even breeds that lay blue or green eggs!
