Stone Hollow Homestead We are a small family homestead next to the Little Maquoketa River in the Midwest Driftless Region. Stone Hollow Gardens began in 2015.

Christopher and Emily Appelman moved into a windmill house nestled between two limestone ridges. The month after they moved in they broke ground, readying themselves for the garden to follow. A month and a half later they were already selling plant starters at the Dubuque Farmers Market. Since then they have become known as the local foragers and growers. Eight months out of the year they organically farm, cultivate and forage mushrooms, and make jams/preserves with berries gathered from around their local area. Their cultivated mushrooms are grown outside on logs. This growing method enhances flavor and makes each mushroom variety seasonal. Outside of the season they offer dehydrated mushrooms. Stop by the Dubuque Farmer's Market and visit the Stone Hollow Gardens stand. Throughout the season stay updated weakly on what will be at their stand. Dubuque Farmer's Market is every Saturday, beginning the first weekend in May, from 7am to 12pm.

An amazing week was had here in the hollow After a couple weeks of feeling not so great more often than not definitely a better week than last week, in every way that matters most😉🙏……..

I am feeling Refreshed and well rested After a little bit of much needed R&R and grateful Time off, Epic🍄‍🟫harvests were made in our always improving Shroom Shack and finally with cooler temperatures here to stay heavy🍄‍🟫pickings in the Wild were made…Snow cap Shiitake, delicious Maitake, Pink and Blue Oyster mushroom pick’n here in the hollow and beyond abundant harvests of Wild Maitake(Hen of the Woods) and Beautifully Delicious Lions mane….. on the Stone Hollow side of things….. you’ll find beyond enough 🍄‍🟫’s among our offerings and more than plenty to go around tomorrow morning at Dubuque Farmers' Market and with Our new Bucket Grow kits starting to fruit after just two weeks of incubation….a whole lot more (Pink And Blue Oyster) coming your way next week!

As far as me “The Papa” Sparrow Lee and Mae Mae Moon….. time well spent and Surprises for the girls (and the guineas) Were well received….. Sparrow & Mae Mae’s bedroom cleaned & rearranged to fit A much larger home & Habitat for our beyond cute and furry family additions to spend their time in when they’re not in our arms…. As well as a little furry surprise for The Papa….. A cute little baby guinea🐹friend of my very own…. We’d like you to meet Renook a.k.a Nookie the newest edition to our beautiful little family!

A somewhat precarious week here in the hollow….. regretfully letting y’all know that I’ll be unable to attend Dubuque Farmers Market tomorrow morning….With a beyond compromised immune system after 2 1/2 years of radiation, chemo and all the necessary ☢️ treatment it took to survive and beat The Big C…..I’ve regretfully Come down with a slight case of pneumonia and will be taking the weekend Off to rest, rest, rest in between catching up on a few mushroom chores …

Expanding liquid cultures, transferring beautiful mycelium/Hyphae from Petri dish tissue cultures to Agar rich liquid culture jar’s, whipping up a few mushroom kits, recycling a few spent🍄‍🟫kits into Bucket🍄‍🟫grow Kits and most importantly working on a couple amazing surprises for my most amazing not so little girls Sparrow Lee & Esmae Moon…. of course all guinea
related 😉🐹👊!

But don’t worry friends I’ll be getting the rest I need when I need it most….. And as Always Mark and Jenn over at Bodees Will be sautéing up our delicious mushrooms🍄‍🟫 for y’all at Dubuque Farmers' Market Tomorrow morning 8am-12noon !

A fairly busy week navigating the at this point usual doctors appointments 😳( great news on that side), prepping the Homestead for fall 🍂and preparing the Shroom shack for winter 🍄‍🟫 cultivation, Utilizing constructive & better ways outside of just composting our spent mushroom blocks By expanding that all productive & still usable mycelium into something more🍄‍🟫 viable as well as long-term, an in general restocking of everything mushroom for Market 😵‍💫, A beautifully epic mushroom harvest was made in our always improving shroom shack..

Last, but not least, and always most importantly….Sparrow And Esmae Squeezed up some of the best Elderberry Pink lemonade and old-fashioned lemonade they’ve ever Squeezed as well as had an amazing week Hanging out with the newest, furriest and beyond adorable additions to our family….. Max (a.k.a. Maximus) and Mr. Squeaks The guinea pigs…. Best decision ever….Talk about cuteness overload when it comes to the girls in their furry bundles of awesome!

A normal by our standards beyond busy week here in the Hollow…

A Monday through Tuesday overnight and back & forth trip to Mayo Clinic for all important follow up scans and tests….. all good news outside of An understandably compromised immune system and post treatment side effects that we’ll be dealing with for a few years to come.
Everything is A-OK on the Big C side those things….. where all scans and tests came back negative for all signs of the Big C!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🙏🙏🙏🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
For now, 🤞it looks like that part of this incredible journey is over….. now it’s time to step back and heal wherever we can in between things from what it took to survive this!

A Wednesday through Thursday, playing catch up here in the hollow…. Harvesting delicious mushrooms from wild timber and our always improving Shroom🍄‍🟫Shack, a bit of Fall 🍂 cleaning, a bit of mushroom work
Creating and inoculating 🍄‍🟫 grow bags for future harvests throughout the winter, a little bit of me time hanging out with a very special😍friend 😉(you know who you are), hanging out and spending Much needed and long awaited time catching up with my most amazing little Sister Jamie 🥰 And last but not least an incredibly important navigation of two New very cute & furry little members of our little family into their new home here in the hollow!

An incredibly busy week, where I also came down with a slight cold and with the weather this morning, where it’s gonna rain most the day I regret to inform you, that we won’t be attending Market this morning because of all the above, just to be on the safe side as far as my immune system goes !

Rain + cold = A potentially not so healthy Papa !
So me and the girls are hanging back this morning in order for Sparrow And Esmae to meet the cutest and slightly furry new additions to our little family as well as keeping my health on the up and up!

But don’t worry friends we’ll be back bright and early next Saturday morning at Dubuque Farmers' Market With a virtual plethora of fresh harvested mushrooms, pink and old-fashioned lemonades, piping hot, homemade apple c***r, ready to fruit mushroom kits, Stone Hollow mushroom science kits and much more to choose from……

Grab an umbrella and those rubber boots try to stay dry today because they’re still so many incredible vendors to choose from and even if we aren’t there our mushrooms will be on sandwiches just like they are every week over at Bodees breakfast.….. we’ll see you next week with bells on!

A beautiful but hot and somewhat hard week for me and the girls….. unfortunately me and the girls had to say goodbye to our beloved Grandmama this week and couldn’t miss her more than we do right now…..

I gotta tell you….so far as a Papa one of The hardest things I’ve ever done is tell my two most amazing not so little girls that my Mama’s mama and Sparrow and Mae Mae’s grandma had passed away!

Goodbye grandmama, you are and will be missed 💗 beyond words!

After somewhat of a rough start and an absolute scorcher of a week We’re picking up the pieces, keeping busy and doing our best as a family…. but be assured we’ll be packed up and rolling homestead heavy into Dubuque Farmers' Market bright & early tomorrow morning for Labor Day weekend!

We Kept ourselves busy in and out of the heat and in between things this week with amazing conversations with Sparrow hawk while waiting for her school bus at one of the prettiest bus stops the side of the Mississippi, A little bit of Schoolwork, Reading time and Papa time at home with Mae Mae Moon while she recovered, Wild Elderberry and Pear🍐pick’n, Mushroom🍄‍🟫harvesting (homegrown & Wild🍄‍🟫caught😉), potting up plants 🪴 , squeezing organic lemons and juicing up Elderberries, blueberries & watermelon for a few delicious and seasonal Pink lemonade creations For Labor Day weekend….

An incredibly fun but
busy busy week in and out
of the Hollow …..

Attended Sageville’s “Back To School Open House” with the girls on Monday after finally getting our amazing and not so little girls back into their school of choice, needless to say Sparrow & Esmae Moon Were more excited for their first day back to school Than I’ve seen them in a very long time!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😉🤗👊🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

And early week spent wandering timber and trail in search of wild eats For our bellies and Dubuque Farmers' Market as well as More than a bit of tedious Mushroom work in between things here in the Hollow…. Creating 🍄‍🟫grow bags, expanding liquid🍄‍🟫cultures, inoculating future🍄‍🟫blocks, initiating the fruiting process in over 30+ ready to fruit mushroom blocks preparing for fall, winter and future harvests over the next few months….

And a Thursday to Friday impromptu visit to Iowa City with Mae Mae Moon to navigate a couple very important 🦷 issues…. So incredibly proud Of our most amazing 7 year old girl for her Bravery, strength and patience As we managed this hurried but important 🦷 surgery in Iowa City…. Don’t worry Esmae is back home Cuddled up and cozy here in the hollow with The Papa and her most amazing supportive sister Sparrow recovering and resting for the weekend!

In order to navigate a restful weekend for our youngest Mae Mae moon This here Papa will be taking off this weeks Dubuque farmers Market for all the right reasons 😉🤗👊!

A Soggy bottomed⛈️and busy, busy week in and out of the Hollow……

A somewhat compromising as well as a precariously slippery week spent wandering timber & trail In search of wild morsels for home, our bellies 🤤 and tomorrow mornings Market…😉🍄‍🟫🫐🍄🌿👊…..a nice flush of Wild Chicken of the Woods & a Few late season Oyster mushrooms were procured, a rainy day trip to the Vineyard/Orchard to check on Concord’s 🍇 and harvest a few flats of Bartlet as well as Asian Pears 🍐 in between things !

Back at home in the Hollow my most amazing and beautiful not so little girls Sparrow Lee & Mae Mae moon landed back home For 1 of our 2 most Cherished and grateful weekends together outta the month… they got to Squeeze’n lemons🍋press’n cherries🍒, blueberries🫐, raspberries And juice’n a couple delicious local watermelons🍉 to whip up some of the best Pink and Old-Fashioned lemonade this side of the Mississippi…… while our beyond creative young entrepreneurs navigated their homestead inspired lemonade creations and bagging up RiverStones The Papa(me) got down to a bit of somewhat hurried Market prep restock’n🍄‍🟫 Seasoning blends, Prepping then drying one of my favorite Medicinals Red Reishi, bottling 🍄‍🟫extracts, pick’n a literal plethora of Fresh Organically grown Mushrooms🍄‍🟫from the Shroom Shack(Shiitake🍄‍🟫,Lions mane😳,Baby&Jumbo🍄‍🟫Portobello and Golden/Grey Dove/Blue/Florida Oyster Mushrooms), weighing and box’n up an epic🍄‍🟫mushroom harvest, putting around 30+ new fully colonized🍄‍🟫grow bags into they’re fruiting chambers, inoculating 20+ newly made 🍄‍🟫 5 1/2 pound🍄‍🟫grow bags, putting together a few more “Stone Hollow Mushroom Trio and Single Science Kits, Sorting then box’n up Pears in between hanging out with the girls, making popcorn/huge from scratch Belgium waffles/delicious breakfasts/lunches & dinners, watching movies, playing games and enjoying the precious time we have together…. And just like that….. here we are again back to Friday rolling Homestead heavy 😉😵‍💫🙏😳👊with less than 24 hours before we’re dodging rain☔️and setting up those canopies, tables and laying out our
grateful Homestead goods
at Dubuque Farmers' Market 😵‍💫 !
