This have been quiet on this page for a while. Good news is, all is well on the farm. We are in the trenches of kidding season. There are baby goats bouncing around nearly every surface of the barn. It’s shaping up to be a good start to the year.

Seeing Georgiana thriving at her forever farm just makes us proud. I knew from the beginning that Georgiana was a special sort of pup. She and her sister found their perfect, forever farm this past summer. We received an update on them recently and they couldn't be doing better!

Available Karakachan Pups - all are located in Dufur Oregon, working under the supervision of their parents.

Georgiana (female, 20 weeks)
Bold, self composed, independent, yet sweet. She doesn’t desire much human interaction. She likes her job and takes it seriously for a pup her age. Born in the chicken coop, you shouldn’t be surprised that she has lived with them her entire life. She has also done well with goats.

Colleen (female, 20 weeks)
She may not be on top of the pack but she holds her own just fine. She is slightly more social than her sister but still has little desire to be anything but a working dog. She has excelled with both chickens and goats. She is an incredibly fast learner. She will do well in a home with additional working dogs as she doesn’t seem to challenge pack dynamics often.

Dozer (male, 7 weeks)
He has a different set of parents, thus the age difference. He is the last pup for his litter but at no fault of his own. He is very social and would do fantastic in any sort of farm setting. He loves to greet us each morning and then scurries back to his goats as quickly as his little legs will carry him.

Farming is hard enough on its own… finding the right livestock guardian shouldn’t be. That’s why I’m excited to share with y’all about our Karakachans.
We unexpectedly have two pups looking for their forever farms. Bennett and Georgiana are both precious pups with great dispositions although almost exact opposites 🤣 Where Bennett is a calm, go with the flow, sort of guy, Georgiana is a little fireball. Both love their goats, they have done an excellent job learning the ropes from their parents, are registered, and had their first visit to the vet for a full health exam/shots/etc. Both have been handled daily by myself and our children to ensure they are properly socialized with all aspects of farm life.
Mom Maggie and Dad Teddy are both excellent chicken/goat/sheep guardians. The pups will continue enjoying learning from mom and dad until their new farmers are ready to come meet them. We do ask each potential home to fill out an application as it’s incredibly important to us that we pair up each pup and farmer correctly. We will continue to offer additional training support for the lifetime of all of our pups.

Update on Bear. A pup from one of our litters a few years ago.
Reading this made me proud to raise Karakachans.

"We live in a wooded area with the common livestock predators such as raccoons, opossums, coyotes, foxes, and even some uncommon predators like mountain lions and badgers. Adding a livestock guardian was our last resort after all our other attempts to protect our animals had failed. In one year we had lost over 200 chickens and a few goats."

"I had never heard of Karakachans before, but after some research they sounded like the perfect dog to protect our farm animals and become part of the family. I still remember the excitement, as well as the concerns that I had when Bear first arrived. Would he really be able to handle the job alone?"

"I am no dog trainer so I had some serious concerns that he wouldn’t instinctively know what to do without someone qualified to teach him."

"I use to worry that a dog strong enough to protect the farm animals wouldn’t be gentle enough with our son who is in a wheelchair or my young grandchildren, but those fears were quickly resolved. "

"Three years later, I can confidently share that Bear not only protects the farm animals but our family too. We haven’t lost a single animal since Bear joined the farm. I call him our gentle giant. He’s a large dog, weighing just over 100 pounds, but when he’s near my son or grandchildren he is incredibly gentle and rolls over on his back asking for belly rubs. He is incredibly intelligent and picks up easily on what I want him to do. We have found the carcasses of the predators after he’s had a long night of working. When anyone arrives to the farm that isn’t family (yes he knows the difference) he will bark to alert me that they are here. I appreciate that he only barks when he’s communicating something to me that I need to check out and not just barking at every deer that passes by. "

"Our lives have been changed for the better since Bear joined the family and farm. Thank you to Azure Farm for breeding these beautiful animals and for all the time you’ve given to answer our questions. We’ve never felt alone in this journey."

Gorgeous morning on the farm. Maggie greeted me with the sunrise this morning.

Maggie is the youngest of our pack and a skilled guardian. She loves her goats the most but also guards all the feathered friends in her pasture.
