An overdue update for y'all!
We’ve been working hard, enjoying our first full season here on Moonlight Hill. Little by little we are getting more land in production and are currently growing potatoes, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, and more -- seeing how long into the colder months we can keep things in production.
Our garlic harvest went wonderfully, Inchelium being the most prolific this year(check out the braid we made)! Soon we will be planting next year’s crop.
Getting all of our structures in place has been a fun challenge. We now have the main garage workshop space which worked as the temporary drying location for the garlic harvest, and also houses all of our tools and equipment. We quickly learned we would need to beef up our security, so have recruited 3 new barn cats to our team: Mr. Pix, Ashley, and Lilly. Mr. Pix is the head of security in the garage workshop, while Ashley & Lilly are working to keep Jillbilly’s safe from intruders.
As we continue to grow here in Virginia, our plan to is start offering a limited CSA membership, as well as attend a local market starting in the spring. More details on this to come!!

We've been making progress here on the farmstead. The workshop is almost ready. I just have to finish the interior walls and lighting. The garlic is looking pretty good so far. We've planted 50 trees and berries. I'd like to plant another 50 before the season is over.
We won't be doing any markets this year but by this time next year we should be creating an abundance of food and feeding as many families as possible.

I forgot to share this when Finch wrote it. She is such a great writer and a beautiful person. I'll make another post soon. We have so much going on it's hard to keep up.

Hi everyone. It's Tuesday's tool post. This is one of my newest tools. It's called a scythe and they have been around for centuries. This one is custom fit and handmade in Maine. I absolutely love it. It takes down some of the thickest hay with little effort and it burns calories not fossil fuels. I've been using it to make mulch hay and greens for the compost.

Welcome to our farmstead page. We're creating a new farm and homestead in south western Virginia. We hope to have an abundance of healthy food for our community. Soon, we'll have all the plans and details to share with you. There's a lot of work to do but thankfully the land was well cared for before we arrived.
So follow along and we'll try to keep it interesting and fun.
