If it feels like the season has gotten away from you, it hasn't.

Late April in The North is when many of the most important seedlings actually want to get started. It just doesn't always look that way when the ground is still frozen and everyone on the internet seems to be a month ahead.

This weekend, I'm filling trays with tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cabbage, kale, lettuce, spinach, celery, and basil. Nine crops that all belong there right now, each for its own reason.

I pulled together a short post with what each one needs and why this timing works, if you want a little more direction as you get going:

See the Blog link in the comments below.

The season doesn't rush in up here. It builds. And this is the weekend it starts to take shape.

What's going in your trays this weekend? Let's us know in the comments!

Elderberry canes are ready.

Next week, we're shipping dormant cuttings from our own farm grown elderberry plants in Northern Minnesota. One shipment for the season and once they're gone, they're gone.

5 cuttings / $20 10 cuttings / $35

If you've been burned by plants that couldn't handle a Northern winter, elderberry is the antidote. It thrives in Zones 3–7, rebounds hard after the coldest months, and once it's established, it asks almost nothing of you. Drought-tolerant in decent soil. Minimal inputs. Long-lived.

And it earns its place. Berries for syrup, jam, wine, and immune support. Flowers for teas and cordials. A hedge that feeds pollinators in summer and birds in fall. One plant doing a lot of quiet work in your garden.

We’re still smiling from Saturday’s Harvest Festival!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Taiga booth for garlic, elderberry seedlings, or just to say hello. Your support means the world — and it kept us busy unloading, sorting, and fulfilling orders these past few days.

Despite a few bursts of rain (and some shivering!), it was still a beautiful day along Lake Superior. Meeting so many of you reminded us that the first chapter of fall is best shared together. 🍂

And while garlic is moving fast, this season’s real star is elderberries. 🌱
Fall is the perfect time to plant — roots settle in now, blooms and berries following next year. We’ll be sharing more about why these shrubs are such workhorses in the weeks ahead.

👉 Missed us at the festival? You can still shop here: https://taigafarmandseed.com/collections

A Plant You’ll Keep for Years

Imagine stepping outside on a summer morning, your coffee in hand, walking past a row of lush green elderberry bushes. In spring, they burst with clouds of white blooms, buzzing with pollinators. By late summer, clusters of deep purple berries hang heavy, ready for syrups, teas, or baking.

Elderberries are one of those plants that give back season after season; beauty, food, habitat, and even a little privacy from the neighbors. And yes, they thrive in northern yards, even in small spaces.

Our certified organic elderberry seedlings are ready now, with strong 8-inch roots that will settle right in for fall and leap to life in spring. Choose from: Nova, York, or our farm favorite, Marge.

📦 Includes our step-by-step planting & care guide
💲 $15 each | 5 for $70 | 10 for $135

Woohoo! We are on our second run of Taiga Farm and Seed collections! We are printing at such a quantity that we needed a print company to handle it. The challenge was keeping the unique envelope size. The technician in the photo is a master at his craft, and he was able to manipulate the machine into accepting the small size. I went through countless print companies before I landed here. So grateful, and more so, because I understand the rare gift of this company. It took this highly skilled technician and 15' of complex machine to produce a 4" seed packet. Thank the good Lord above!

Hot off the press, the seed packet that will soon be filled and shipped out to you in one of our amazing seed collections for northern gardeners!

Finally, this monster is another amazing feat of technology. It will soon be custom printing AND cutting our boxes with our logo colors and precise needs to each seed collection.
