Today's adventure finds us at KO Distilling .
Today, we raise our glasses to celebrate the spirit that is as American as apple pie and baseball! 🍏⚾ Not only is it National Bourbon Day, but it's also Flag Day—a delightful coincidence that perfectly embodies our nation's rich history and love for this distinctive spirit.
Did you know that bourbon is officially recognized as "America's Native Spirit"? In 1964, Congress declared bourbon a "distinctive product of the United States," meaning it can only be made right here in the good ol' USA. 🗽 From Kentucky's rolling hills to Virginia's own distilleries, bourbon has been warming our hearts and bringing people together for generations.
To honor this double celebration, let's dive into some fun bourbon facts:
1. **Bourbon's Recipe:** By law, bourbon must be made from at least 51% corn. This gives it that sweet, rich flavor we all love. 🌽
2. **The Aging Process:** Bourbon must be aged in new charred oak barrels. This aging process gives bourbon its unique character and beautiful amber color. 🪵
3. **No Additives Allowed:** Unlike other spirits, bourbon cannot have any additives—no coloring, flavoring, or sweeteners. It's pure, unadulterated goodness! 🍯
4. **The Lincoln County Process:** Some bourbons, especially Tennessee bourbon (Whiskey), use this unique filtering method through charcoal before aging. This step adds a smooth, mellow finish to the final product. 🔥
As we celebrate today, let's not forget to also honor the stars and stripes of our beloved flag. 🇺🇸 The same flag that symbolizes freedom, unity, and the pursuit of happiness—the very spirit that bourbon embodies with each sip.
