My very, very, favorite herb and flower. Calendula! I use it in my salve and this year I want to infuse it in the oil used for soap. I hope to not only get the healing properties in the soap but also give it a little color.

Maybe I love herbs so much cause they grow like weeds. I mean everyone can grow this flower! And it keeps coming back every year!

The legend is that animal fats were washed down Mount Sapo and combined with ashes. When they were washed in the water where the women were washing clothes, the clothes became cleaner than just water alone!

I am sure the legend of Mount Sapo just makes a good story but they can find "soap" recipes as far back as 2800 BC. Animal fat and Ashes were mixed with water to create the first soaps. The Egyptians later added salt to make the soap harder and creamier to use on their skin.

To make a very basic bar soap and to learn the entire soap making process you just need fat (olive oil and coconut oil), water, and lye (ashes).

Nothing big. Nothing grand. Why did I even plant it?

These are the questions that go through my head everyday. What are you gonna do with a bushel of potatoes and 5 carrots? You could just go to the store and buy it. Less work, less money....

Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we let that voice hold us back from starting something new? Every year I want to plant a garden but I am not as experienced as those YouTubers. I don't know all the tricks of the trade. But I am starting and maybe I will enjoy it. Maybe I will learn something. Maybe I can grow my garden and myself?

We all start somewhere. What are you doing this summer that makes you feel like a beginner?

If making soap is on that list, I can help. Sometimes going online can feel overwhelming. We have so much knowledge right at our finger tips that it actually holds us back.

I am fascinated about how soap was originally found and used (more on that tomorrow). But if soap has been around for 1000's of years it can't be that hard to make. Right?

Right! You just have to start. Start basic, learn the skill. Where will you be in 10 years?

Let's rewind ⏪⏪⏪

I got a little carried away last week with the face soap recipe. I forgot that most people here have never made soap before and that face soap recipe is NOT beginner friendly.

So let's rewind and do a simple, easy, no fail soap recipe this week. This recipe contains only coconut oil, olive oil, lye, and water. Let me hold your hand as we get down all the basic steps to make soap.

Today we finish up the process and make the face soap. This is not a beginner soap. The soap hits trace quickly. But you need to make sure YOU do hit trace!

What is the magic ingredient in our face soap? It is neem oil! Neem oil is great for a face soap because it is anti inflammatory. This soap is very cleansing and less conditioning. Meaning it removes the oils and leaves your face less greasy!
