It's officially pruning time! 🌱✨
To support the vineyard during dormancy, pruning is a critical part of vine health and long-term balance. At pruning, we retain two permanent cordons (one on each side of the trunk) while removing the previous season’s growth. This approach is known as double cordon spur pruning and, while it is the most prevalent method across the estate, it is not the only pruning technique we employ at Hyland. Rather than selecting new canes each year (as in cane pruning), we preserve the same cordons season after season. Over time, these cordons harden and become more trunk-like, creating the distinctive structure seen throughout the vineyard.
In fact, this enduring vine form is the inspiration behind our iconic Hyland Estates vine logo.
Over the coming weeks, our vineyard team will be out in the rows, carefully pruning each vine by hand. This annual process is both precise and purposeful, setting the foundation for balanced growth and quality fruit in the season ahead. While the vines may appear quiet for now, this thoughtful winter work plays a crucial role in shaping the vintage to come.
