๐ฅถ Morgan here... a few photos from this past weekend! I'm not going to lie, the past few days of bone-chilling cold has been rough, and even though Kyle and I are both from the Midwest and should be "used to the cold" it doesn't come without a lot of extra prep, hard work, and sometimes a little frustration. Luckily, the temps seem to trending up ๐ and we'll be be out of the deep freeze.
We fed everyone a little extra ahead of the cold settling in, if you know anything about ruminant (animals like cattle, goats, etc.) nutrition, you know their rumen (part of their four-compartment stomach) provides them a large part of their heat source and even pur calves spent a good part of the weekend outside, especially when the sun was shining. We can also help with with bedding, shelter, and wind breaks.
๐ฆ Keeping water tanks open is always a challenge, thank goodness we've done some work on our old automatic one and only once did the float freeze (not the water line), but about a gallon of hot water later and it was fine.
๐ซถ We've been thinking a lot about many our friends in the South who have had ice and snow that is completely out of the ordinary for their areas. We are praying you're all ok.
Why do farmers and ranchers do what we do? While I can't speak for everyone, I personally love being a small part of the industry that helps to feed the world. So, thank you in advance to all of our fellow animal caretakers across the US and world who continue the time-honored tradition in our modern times, even when not everyone appreciates our long hours and hard work.
