Subject: Action Needed: Support Mandatory COOL in the Senate Farm Bill
Background: On Aug. 6, the Senate Agriculture Committee delivered a major win by advancing a mandatory country-of-origin labeling (MCOOL) amendment to the Farm Bill with a strong bipartisan 17–6 vote. That victory proved what we’ve been saying all along: MCOOL is achievable when independent producers and consumers speak up. The committee is expected to reconvene in mid-September to vote on the full Farm Bill after returning from August recess.
Last Friday, President Trump issued an executive order directing USDA, together with the U.S. Trade Representative, to review within 90 days what authority the government already has to bring back mandatory country‑of‑origin labeling for beef. He also recognized that Congress has a key role in implementing and restoring MCOOL. In addition, the order requires USDA to update the economic analysis for MCOOL and determine whether new regulations or legislative recommendations are needed to restore mandatory labeling. This action shows clear support from the President and gives our efforts important momentum.
Action: Now that we have momentum from both the Senate Agriculture Committee’s strong 17–6 vote and the President’s executive order, we need to build on that progress and make sure Congress hears directly from independent producers and consumers who support restoring MCOOL. Opponents of mandatory labeling are likely contacting Congress as well, so it’s important that all of us make our voices heard.
Step 1: Call Your Senators
Urge them to support restoring mandatory country‑of‑origin labeling for beef. You can reach their offices through the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected by name. If you don’t reach a staff member, leave a voicemail – your message will still be counted.
Keep your message simple: “Please keep mandatory country-of-origin labeling (MCOOL) for beef in the Senate Farm Bill.”
Step 2: Sign the National Petition
Approximately 8,700 people have signed the petition since its launch last week. Add your name to support restoring MCOOL and share it with others. Here is the petition link: https://form.jotform.com/262434091212043
