A very slow start to a season plagued by damping off, beetles and rabbits. But we are here and in good humor. This pretty much is what the trolls say in my brain, too.....😂

We had a bit of a slow start here at Flourish Farm. Right about now you would be seeing trays of fat and healthy 2 1/2 month old tomato seedlings but we had almost a total crop failure wiping out over 800 seedlings. We finally got a small late second crop started that will be available the second week in June at the stand. We will also have a selection of peppers at that time, too.

Progress in the field is chugging along. It is full of beds sprouting seeds, including Yellow Crookneck squash, White Bush Lebanese squash, and Black Beauty zucchini. There are also beets, all sorts of lettuce varieties, cabbage, green beans, pickling and slicing cucumbers, red potatoes, fingerling potatoes and peas. Soon to be planted are more varieties of lettuce, watermelon, pumpkin, tomatoes, peppers, celery, pole beans and herbs. All our produce is grown from seed here at the farm and without pesticides, using organic principles.

One of the reasons our plants are so stocky and strong is that they are exposed to real sunlight and weather at an early stage. I’ll be honest, some don’t make it, but those that do are hearty! We bring them out and then back inside our house until the weather permits them to stay out perpetually. Our housemate Spencer rigged up this staging so I wouldn’t have to bend so much carrying them in and out. It has two levels and pretty much has space for all the seedlings. It is simple and works great. I love it. You are looking at mostly tomato seedlings but also in there are cabbages, broccoli, basil, peppers and flowers.

These little guys are the micro dwarf tomato plants that I am selling. Just starting out, of course. They grow in a 6” pot, reach a maximum of 8” in height and sit on your sunny windowsill. All that cuteness and they actually produce an abundance of tomatoes! Inside, no less! Tomatoes self pollinate, so all you have to do is shake them a bit when they are flowering. Wishing you had a veg garden but don’t have a space or have very limited space? Looking for a gift for your house bound tomato lover? These are for YOU. See comments for price list (under dwarf varieties).

Many of you may not realize this, but we don’t have a greenhouse. I grow all my plants inside my house without grow lights, but by bringing them out and back in, when the weather permits. It means I grow strong stocky little plants with good root systems. It’s a lot of work, but it pays off. This is what my dining room floor looks like at the moment. 😂.
