Nile calved 11 days early yesterday with this beautiful heifer calf sired by Squibb-Red. I wasn't home at the time she calved. But Nile did a great job as a first time mom, carefully watching over her calf until I got there.

We had a surprise early this morning. Redeeming Love calved a week early with a big bull calf. Last night we had to get chores done early because of a family event. I decided to put Redeeming Love in the maternity boxstall because we would be gone for several hours and I didn't want to worry about her, even though I really didn't think she was that close to calving. I checked the camera before I went to bed and she was up and did not appear to be in labor. But at 3:15 am when I got up there was the calf! Praise the Lord I was led to put her in the boxstall overnight.

It's been busy around here with two new babies arriving early! Our Jersey, Fettuccini, (Linguini's daughter) calved almost 2 weeks early with a heifer calf sired by Brecken. Psalm, a Brown Swiss, calved a few days early with a heifer calf sired by Dark Horse. We are still waiting for Gnocchi to calve; her due date was today.

Happy Mother's Day! We have many bovine moms on our farm, including Eternal Love, who calved Wednesday night with this beautiful heifer calf sired by Top Notch. Eternal Love is a first time mom and went almost a week overdue. She needed assistance delivering her big calf but both mom and baby are doing well. Most gestation calendars that we have use a typical Holstein gestation length of 280 days. Brown Swiss average a 10 day longer gestation, so I add 10 days for my Swiss when calculating their due date. Eternal Love went 16 days past a typical Holstein gestation. She definitely deserves extra love on this Mother's Day.

Sadly, despite the progress she had made yesterday, Pepsi passed away overnight. I checked in on her last night before bed, and she appeared fine. This photo was taken about 12 hours before I got to the barn at 4 am and found her, and it was quite a shock based on the improvement she had made. Most of our current Jersey herd descends from her, including a great great granddaughter in our milking herd. We are blessed to have been her caretakers, and we will miss our Pepsi Girl.

Matt's cow Pepsi, a 12 year old Jersey, calved Monday afternoon with complications. Her heifer calf was fine, but Pepsi had milk fever and a pinched nerve. I treated her for both conditions, and Tuesday Pepsi seemed to be improving, getting up on her own and eating. But Wednesday morning she didn't eat, and ended up going out flat out by midday. Thankfully veterinarian Dr. Masur was bringing her vet tech students back to the farm for a scheduled clinic. Dr. Masur determined Pepsi had a phosphorus deficiency and treated her as the group of students looked on. Pepsi eventually was able to get up on her own and hopefully is on her way to recovery.
