By the look on her face, Passion is regretting her decision to try to jump out of her hutch. She heard me getting ready to bring her milk pail to her and she decided she couldn't wait half a minute for me to get to her. To be fair, the pallet is supposed to be in front of her door to block her from jumping out, while allowing airflow into the hutch. Passion was unhurt, and let me gently lift her front end up and push her back in to safety.

Saturday was a busy day! Our hoof trimmer, or should I say the amazing bovine podiatrist Richard Weingart, was here to trim our whole herd, plus a few others that were trailered in from other farms. I noticed Promise was in labor as Richard was getting started, so I made sure she got her hooves trimmed first. Shorty after that she delivered this beautiful heifer calf sired by World Class. Regular hoof trimming is part of herd health care and helps keep the cows' hooves in shape so they can walk properly.

This handsome fellow is a Brown Swiss bull calf born early last Thursday morning. Brown Swiss calves have a reputation for being stubborn to feed, but this guy eats like a champ!

Since I haven't posted in a while, I thought I would try to catch up on the past few weeks. First up is a Red and White Holstein heifer calf born in mid June. Mom is Reggie, a black and white Holstein sired by Aristocrat-Red, a red and white bull. Sire of the calf is Hulu, also a black and white bull but is a carrier of the red gene. To get this red and white calf out of two black and white parents, each parent had to pass the recessive red gene to the calf. I lost Reggie's other red and white daughter earlier this year, so I cried happy and grateful tears when I saw this calf was not only red and white, but a spitting image of her sister. I still haven't decided on a name for the calf yet.
