Well, this was a sweet little surprise!

We were recently featured in Neighbors of Livingston County, a publication sharing stories about local folks. It talks a bit about our family, our background, how Gooseberry Acres came to be, and what we’re working toward.

We’re grateful to have been recommended for the cover and thankful for the chance to reflect on how our lives and our little family have grown. More than anything, we’re grateful to you all who keep showing up for us! Buying bread, picking up eggs or honey, checking in about the market, sharing a kind word, or telling a friend about us.

Thanks for being part of the story with us! 🪿 💛

MEET OUR TOMATOES 🍅 😋

It’s our first year growing inside the high tunnel. The warmth and humidity makes a great home for tomatoes and peppers, and lets us plant earlier in the year. This season, we’ve got 60 plants of our favorite, yummy tomato varieties.

1) Cherokee Purple - This tomato has a rich flavor and deep purple skin. It’s great for sandwiches and burgers!

2) Esterina Cherry Tomatoes - These clusters of deliciousness have a bright taste and a beautiful golden orange color. Perfect to pop in your mouth or place on salads!

3) Amish Paste - These heart-shaped beauties are wonderful in stews and sauces. We recommend making a nice marinara with these!

In a few days, these babies will start to ripen and get plucked from the vine. You can snag these veggies and more at the market later this summer and fall, or at the farmstand near Emington!

Another close call for the farm 🌪️ This passed about a mile-ish north of us. We first saw a skinny rope over the trees but watched it organize into a very large tornado. We aren’t sure of the extent of of damage to our neighbors in Emington and Dwight, but it appears there is a lot.

Our house is actually situated in an odd spot that doesn’t receive TV signals, and if we do, we live between coverage areas for the local stations! Sometimes one signs off coverage before the next picks up, so we rely on digital sources to help us out. We were able to get a heads-up from Ryan Hall, Y’all and his team 🙏

Summer is in full swing over here at 🪿 🌾☀️ Here’s a quick update from your farm fam:

First the good/bad: We’re so fortunate to have a little extra time with Gus this past month. Our Pyreneese was diagnosed with bone cancer at just 6 years old in May. He’s remaining comfortable and happy with us and his best friends, the kittens. ❤️

We’ve been outside a lot recently, as you can tell by our amazing farmer’s tans. 😎 We have 60 tomato and pepper plants growing in the high tunnel, and a little more than a dozen other vegetable varieties growing in the market garden. Luke works full-time outside of the garden (and everything we’ve got going on!) so he’s been spending nearly every extra hour keeping things pruned and fed and weeded 😥 Meredith has been downtown more often at , where we can’t wait to open it up to more health/wellness, community events, and more soon!

The kittens are 12-15 weeks old and the four gray tabbies are ready for a new home! We’d love to relocate them somewhere where they can explore and play and be loved. DM us for more info! 🐱

The catalpa trees are bloomed, the bees are all over the clover, and the fireflies have made their debut among some amazing sunsets. The other critters are trying to keep it cool in this humid steamy heat 🥵

We’re still working on preparing our Dwight market and bakery! Fingers crossed for a summer opening, y’all. We’re sourcing producers and vendors, working with other markets and hub, and thinking up fun ways to feed our communities! 🙌

Fresh eggs alert! 🥚 🐓 The Gooseberry Acres farm stand is open once again with our seasonal goods. Stop by at your convenience and grab a dozen or two. Then just self-pay with cash or Venmo. Easy!

Looking at the garden this morning, we should have garlic, scapes, and tomatoes coming in the next few weeks! For now, we have several dozen eggs for $4 per dozen.

📍 24666 N 2900 E in Emington

We’ll keep the farm stand stocked at least until our market opens in downtown Dwight later this summer. Keep an eye on this space for more news on that project in the near future! 👀

Today, we pause to reflect and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

“We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.”

For the past few weeks, we’ve asked neighbors a simple question:

What matters most when you decide what food to buy?

And even though we talked to so many people from different towns, backgrounds, and walks of life, the answers were similar. Most people told us they are looking for food that is:

Affordable
Local
Wholesome, simple, and healthy

That may seem simple and a no-brainer, but it says a lot.

It tells us that people want fresh, good food close to home, but they also need it to fit real family budgets. It tells us that local food cannot just be something special or occasional. It needs to be practical, accessible, and part of everyday life.

We also know there are challenges with that. Local food often costs more to grow, produce, store, and transport, especially when small farms and makers are doing things carefully and on a smaller scale. But that is exactly why this conversation matters.

As we build out Gooseberry Acres Market & Bakery in Dwight, we are thinking about how to support local growers and makers while still offering food that feels useful, welcoming, and realistic for our community. That might look like fresh bread, seasonal produce, simple pantry staples, locally made goods, and partnerships that help more food reach more families.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, voted, talked with us, and shared what matters to you. We are listening, and we would love to keep the conversation going:

What kinds of local foods would you be most excited to have available close to home?

Two swarms in two days?! 😱 A portion of the woods along Gooseberry Creek are being demolished, so we think these colonies have fled to our bee yard. They sure love to clutch onto our baby windbreak Thuja trees!

Luckily, I had a pair of unused nuc-boxes and extra frames to house them. Once I scooped the queens into the boxes, the rest of the bees followed. We’ll see if they stick around long enough to join our farm fam. 🐝

Thank you to Feeding Illinois for highlighting our farm and future market. We are so grateful to be part of this work and a Farm-to-Food-Bank grant recipient!

When we started Gooseberry Acres, we had a little bit of land and a simple desire to share what we had with people around us. We added our roadside farm stand, but felt like we wanted to do something bigger with greater reach.

That said, growing food and getting food safely to people are two different things. Refrigeration, freezer space, dry storage, transport, and safe handling can be expensive and tedious, but absolutely necessary.

Without this grant, we simply could not take this step at the scale we need to. It gives us the ability to build real capacity through Gooseberry Acres Market & Bakery, so we can support local growers, reduce waste, stock more fresh local food, and help more food reach neighbors who need it.

Thanks again to Feeding Illinois for believing in this work and helping make this next step possible. 💛 🪿
