Ice Apocalypse 2026…Day 11
I finally fell last night trying to catch a possum that was attempting to get in my duck enclosure. I first attempted to let my “livestock GUARDIAN dog” take care of it. She sniffed it a few times and walked away!!!

Has anyone seen the forecast for this weekend⁉️Well, here is the official one👇🏼

Tester project last year. It was fun making this. As it got hotter, it was tough keeping the bottom sufficiently watered. But overall FUN & pretty productive! I won’t do it again this year tho. New tester project including corn/large nursery pots & a baby pool🤷🏼‍♀️

Growing ⬇️FODDER⬇️
One way I supplement my chickens feed.
Cinder blocks (I already had) the top grate is from a disassembled hutch. (I save EVERYTHING) it all comes in handy eventually. I fill HALF WAY with dirt. If not, the chickens will rip out the entire plant root & all. During the winter, I plant Rye & 7 top turnips. I just drop in the seed. It grows ALL winter here in Tennessee.
This is in their uncovered run.

Now ya know…..

Now ya know…..

Alright so here's something most people don't actually know about chickens.
How chickens mate:
Roosters and hens don't have the same parts as mammals. Both of them have this one opening called a cloaca. It handles everything - waste and reproduction.
When they mate, the rooster hops on the hen's back for just a few seconds. Their cloacas touch and that's it. People call it a "cloacal kiss" which sounds way fancier than it actually is. It's super quick.
Here's the interesting part:
When that contact happens, s***m gets transferred to the hen. But she doesn't use it right away. She actually stores it inside her body and can keep it viable for days or even weeks.
So one mating session can fertilize multiple eggs over time. She doesn't need the rooster around constantly.
The egg thing everyone gets confused about:
Hens lay eggs whether there's a rooster around or not. If you have backyard hens and no rooster, you're still getting eggs every day.
The difference is those eggs will never hatch into chicks. They're unfertilized.
Only eggs from a hen that's mated with a rooster can develop into baby chicks.
So yeah, your breakfast eggs from hens with no rooster? Those were never going to be chicks anyway.
Pretty efficient system when you think about it. Nature figured out a way for hens to mate once and get multiple fertilized eggs out of it instead of needing the rooster there every single time.
