It’s 4-20, our anniversary, and we wanted to stay somewhere memorable. We ended up staying at the Starrett House in Port Townsend. This place has a free floating spiral staircase (which means only supported by the wall). It is one of two remaining wooden floating staircases in the US. There’s a solar counter on the ceiling above the staircase. Light shines through rose colored glass at the top of the ceiling only on a solstice. The guy who built this place knew his astronomy. Our room had a bed so big it had to be built in the room, a toilet so small I t’s hard to shut the door, and the most Baller bathtub that made up for the small toilet. We saw four deer across the street eating our neighbors grass. We woke up to the sound of seagulls and the smell of salt water. This place is peaceful.

Took a ferry to Port Townsend and now they leave puzzles out on some tables for people to work on. Stacy loves a good puzzle.

Since we’ve been traveling more, we’ve upped our game. Travel tip – if you’re confident there will be vacancies at your destination, you can book last minute, and there are many websites that can find some baller hotels for really sweet deals. The Monaco is a so-called boutique hotel. It used to be the general post office. The first all marble building in DC is now a unique hotel that boasts a Thomas Jefferson bust and a giant lions head in each room. It has 18 foot tall ceilings and windows from floor to ceiling. We explored our last night there. The expansive hallways had a lot of fancy furniture, giant mirrors, and tons of presidential art – Thomas Jefferson being the most prominent. The stairways were large enough for an elephant to walk up, and the restaurant at the heart of the hotel is accessible through the hotel lobby as well as from a side street that was once a carriageway passage for horses and buggies. It’s across the street from the Portrait gallery and within walking distance to a ton of amazing restaurants. I would recommend it if you’re staying in DC.

We are lucky enough to be here at the time of peak cherry blossoms. The Cherry blossom festival really brings the crowds out. I don’t necessarily like the crowds, but I understand why they’re here.

The building museum was built in the late 1800s and has a stunning interior. They’ve used it to hold presidential inaugural balls and you can see why when you get inside. What an impressive space. There isn’t much to see museum wise – but it still feels impactful and totally worth the visit.
