In memory of all who served.
When you love a warrior, you learn.
You learn that warriors will do what others will not and that love is worth the risk of loss.
You learn how to plead with God, sleep with the lights on, and how to let go - before deployments, of the life you wanted and what you thought it might be like when they return.
You learn a different kind of grief when friends who are too young to die, do.
You learn you could be next and how to love the moments you do have. You learn joy instead of fear.
You learn that evil exists, death has no rhyme or reason, and that āfairā and ādeserveā are irrelevant.
You learn how to love in all phases of life through joy, injury, and pain, and you learn to live your vows.
You learn you can be pushed to your limit and still love and forgive more. You learn when others donāt understand your warrior or you that God still does, and that is enough.
Sometimes, you learn loss and that there are no limits to pain. That God lovingly prepared you and that no preparation is enough.
You learn that families donāt always get stronger and come together in pain; sometimes, they fall apart. You learn there is no outrunning grief, only submission to it.
You learn grace for people who donāt understand.
You learn that Godās heart breaks with yours and that, like any loving parent, He will go to war with you and for you. You learn He will never leave you or forsake you.
You learn you never knew love until you fell utterly in love with God and His goodness.
You learn that people will die in the fight, but they will live on forever in your heart. You learn that people will die from this world, but they will live eternally with God.
You learn that your warriorās passage to heaven means you will no longer live fully on earth. You learn it is possible to live with one foot in heaven and one here.
You will learn it is okay to fight and lose and that we all suffer. You will learn it is good to keep living.
I hope when you see the American flag, you see more than a symbol. I hope you see a warrior story. I hope you see opportunities to live, love, and learn. I hope you see the warrior spirit living on.
