June is officially ✨DAIRY MONTH✨

We’d like to recognize our awesome farm team who received a Quality Milk Award from Dairy One. We have milk testing once a month to see herd averages, protein and fat levels and individual cow production. There are a variety of other components that are tested as well by Dairy One.

One of them is somatic cell count. Our rolling herd average for 2025 was 76,000. To put this into perspective, the legal limit is 750,000 per mL for Grade A milk. We were 1 of 491 farms recognized for an outstanding rolling herd average. This low somatic cell count leads to a higher quality of better tasting milk.

We are proud of our farm team for achieving this and maintaining high standards of cleanliness, animal care and workmanship!

Our milk cows get a new pasture to graze every afternoon. The rotational grazing system we use allows the pastures to regrow and have less compaction, producing better quality grass for the cows. We have around 23 pastures to rotate them through, allowing about 3 weeks before they are back in the same pasture again.

You’ll notice a yellow box in the way back of the field. That is a waterer so the cows don’t have to go back to barn to get a drink. We have several along the path they walk down that splits the pastures so they are never far from fresh water.

You’ll also notice when driving by the farm that the cows are usually in the barn during the hottest part of the day. They prefer the shade offered in the barn and the fans running! Our cows will typically go out to pasture a few hours in the evening and overnight and then head back into the barn. They occasionally go out after morning milking if it’s a cooler morning. There is still fresh cow feed made so there is fresh food at the barn too.
