MAD TOM ORCHARD is NOT closing. The “APPLE ORCHARD ESTATE SALE!” advertised for this coming weekend does not involve Mad Tom Orchard in any way.

We are transitioning operation of the orchard to our daughter Jennifer and her husband Frank. The orchard will continue to be here for many more years.

The estate sale at 2734 Mad Tom Road is at the house of our good neighbor Dave Parsons who passed away last July.

Come see us in the Fall and for years to come.

SPRING IS SLOWLY ARRIVING

May 14, 2026
We finished up our pruning at the end of April. Son-in-law Frank was a BIG help spending ten days up here helping get it done. Then we spent ten days getting all the piles of brush picked up and run thru the chipper.

We hope to have made it thru a 21 degree morning on April 20 without a big crop loss when the buds were starting to open on many of the trees. The cold weather has slowed down the bloom development, but now flowers are opening late on many varieties – the last photo shows many flowers on some small Honeycrisp trees. Now we need some sunny weather for the bees to come out.

Sylvia and I are staying healthy and looking forward to seeing you in the fall.

MADE IT THRU THE WINTER

Every one is in good health, fortunately, and trees are all doing well with plenty of fruit buds. Lots of steps to get to harvest time. We need more sun and less rain during bloom than last year.

Pruning was slow with so much snow in January and February - photo shows we are making headway. Pruning goes much faster without the snow. There are several hundred more trees to prune and then we need to feed all the brush thru the chipper.

Put us on your fall schedule - we look forward to seeing you - Tom & Sylvia

So we are starting growing our 2026 crop - photos this year look remarkably similar to those from six years ago. Weather reasonable for pruning is easier to find in March and April than in January and February.

It looks like there are a good number of fruit buds - there are many steps to get a full crop, but we are off to a good start.

Reflecting now on almost 27 years back in Vermont - glad the orchard project has gone so well and that we able to begin the transition to the next generation.

Stay tuned for updates as the season progresses and put us on your calendars for the Fall.

PRUNING IS UNDERWAY

We are taking advantage of any days when the weather is reasonable to get some pruning done. There are good fruit buds on the trees as we start a new crop year!!

November and December have been busy with continued weekly trips for chemo at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. My SSL (small lymphocytic lymphoma) is responding well and I continue to tolerate the treatments ok. We are now down to monthly trips. Our two daughters (and their families) who live in Walpole MA have provided lots of help with transportation and a place to stay.

Today we enjoying a beautiful fresh six inch snowfall while watching the woodstove and celebrating almost 21 years back in Vermont. Pruning will resume when the sun comes out.

Lots of folks searched on Sundays this fall to find Charlie the purple alligator who was sleeping Out in the orchard.

The Jonas Byrge family found him on our last day open. They were nice to him and he did not bite. They got to take Charlie home and a free bag of donuts to share with him.

Charlie (and all his cousins) will rest over the winter and be back next fall. The full story about Charlie can be found at madtomorchard.com/charlie.

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR - Sunday September 28 was our last day for the 2025 season - four good weekends, but not enough apples. For already picked apples go to Duttons Farm Stand on Rt 11 & 30 in Manchester. For pick your own apples try larger orchards like Champlain Orchards in Shoreham or Wellwood Orchards in Springfield.

Our daughter Laura came up from North Carolina to help at the start of harvest. Our daughter Lisa and husband Jan were here every weekend helping in the barn, setting up flower displays at the barn and renovating flower beds at our house. Daughter Jennifer and her husband Frank were also here every weekend - Jennifer and Sylvia made 8000 donuts and Frank ran operations in the barn - they will be taking over the orchard sometime before we are too far into our 90’s.

Glad we were able to see so many familiar people and quite a few new ones. It was nice to have such beautiful weather. Look forward to a bigger harvest next year. Tom & Sylvia.

LAST DAY WILL BE SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 28

It will be a scavenger hunt this weekend for apples. The most fruit available is Macintosh at either end of the old orchard. There are good Macintosh drops and some drops of other varieties.

They are making donuts now and we still have cider and syrup. Looks like good weather – come get a few more apples. Tom

SEASON WINDING DOWN - Last day will be Sunday September 28

Lots of happy customers came this weekend - picked a lot of good apples - ate 2700 donuts.

This week there are still some good Macintosh (mostly in the old orchard) and smaller amounts of Crimson Crisps and Cortlands. You can pick up good Macintosh drops at 1/2 price. Other varieties are picked out.

Cider will be resupplied and maple syrup is on hand.

So come see us and get some more apples to put in your refrigerator.

The photo shows happy Audrey Mack who was very nice to Charlie the purple alligator when she found him in one of the old Macintosh trees - she got to take him home AND a free bag of donuts. Charlies cousin will be out hiding in the orchard on Sunday.
