We brought home 10 little garden tillers today. With another cow due in November they will have a good diet of milk, root crops and other goodies, while living a good life of rooting in the dirt.

If you’ve never been given the stink eye by an animal before, now you have. We were a little late with dinner with getting pigs and could feel the eyes on us.

The greenhouse is getting filled with flower starts for next spring. The garden work has slowed but there is still constant work going in the garden and now I have a greenhouse to fill. I have my fall crops still growing and pig crops to get in. So far they have sweet potatoes to dig up and soon will have turnips to dig. I love the idea of having natural rototillers (pigs) to keep in the garden. Pigs were meant to root, not be raised on concrete. As Joel Salatin believes pigs are built to root as part of honoring what he calls the “pigness of the pig.” They will have the best diet of milk and garden goodies. If you want on the list for half or whole hogs let us know.

This weekend definitely went too fast. Another year enjoying the Homesteaders of America festival in Virginia. I wasn’t sure I wanted to go this year with the property we are in now not having the acreage and everything we wanted but I’m glad they had new speakers and a wide range of subjects that pertained to us. We really enjoy talking to the speakers and shopping the great vendors. If you haven’t been there I highly recommend it. Looking forward to lunch in Berkeley Springs on the way home that’s been a tradition the past few years. Since West Virginia is where we wanted to move to I’ll take any excuse to be there.

I absolutely love soup. Now that it’s been much cooler I have been in full soup mode. This lasagna soup is a hit and it’s a good thing I doubled it because it won’t last long. Especially when I made some homemade crusty bread to eat with it. The great thing about soup is how well most freezes and on nights I don’t feel like cooking it’s so easy to just pull a container from the freezer.

One of my favorite soups is beef vegetable. This is a great soup to make towards the end of the season when you have lots of veggies to use up. I’m the only one who eats this so I can it in pints and it’s the perfect serving for one person. I canned 37 pints and saved a container back to eat fresh. We had lots of brisket in the freezer and I still have 2 big pieces after making this. Up next I’m canning beef stew after I dig some more carrots from the garden.

Don’t get caught off guard this winter without some natural healing essentials. I haven’t had this class in a while and I’m adding even more to it. Join us Saturday, September 26th at 1 pm in Willow Hill for a fun afternoon and get a great start on your natural apothecary.
Everyone in the class will be making a jar of fire c***r, oil of oregano, infused honey and a salve. Cost for this class is $55 per person and includes everything plus some delicious food and herbal teas. Message to sign up.

This is one of my favorite verses and I wish more people lived by it. We keep to ourselves staying busy and stay out of others drama and yet we are still the topic of others conversations who are more worried about our lives than their own.
