Thank you to this crew for getting the pile covered in record time! Friends, neighbors, and employees showed up to work hard, get dirty, and lend a helping hand. We are fortunate to have a community that is so quick to jump in and help.

1st cut is finished! We were racing against the forecasted rain and got it done and covered before more than a drizzle came down. We are thankful for those who showed up to help cover the pile. One of the best parts of farming is the camaraderie that comes with the push to get the feed in.

This is very exciting! In the mid-90s, Laggis Farm (known as Top View Farm at the time) produced a video called “Where the Milk Comes From”. We’ve had many community members reminiscing about watching it as children or with their children many years ago when it could be viewed on VHS. We are so happy to share it can now be viewed on YouTube, thanks to our cousin, Hillary! So much has changed on the farm in 32 years, but we hope you all find joy in watching this video with your families as many others have in the past. Let us know if you’ve already seen it, plan to watch it, or what you think! And please share with anyone you think might enjoy watching it as well.

Come along to get a load of grass with us! First, the grass was mowed and raked into windrows. Unlike dry hay, grass that will become silage is mowed before it goes to seed. It is also not tedded as we don’t want it to dry out completely. A self-propelled chopper chops the grass into short pieces directly into dump trucks as they drive alongside. The trucks bring the chopped grass back to a pile at the farm and heavy tractors push up and drive over the grass until it’s packed together tightly. In a few days when we finish chopping, the pile will be covered with plastic and tires so no air can get to it. In the coming months, the pile will ferment and be preserved to feed for the rest of the year. And voilà, we have grass silage!
