We had our first frost last night and all the squashes and cucumbers took a hit so we went out a harvested everything left on the vines, ready or not. Luckily the tomatoes don’t seem to be affected. I guess we should have brought a basket… 🤣

I mentioned before that we have other chickens besides our laying hens. These are our pasture raised chickens! They are Jersey Giants which will get quite large so they are currently being kept separate. We converted this old goat shed and pasture that was already here and not being used into their area. These ladies will probably mostly be used for meat but we are considering keeping the rooster since he is so docile.

Our three-year-old LOVES helping on the farm. Her chores include collecting eggs, harvesting from the garden, and letting the dogs in and out.

Giving kids chores doesn’t force them to grow up. Kids WANT to help at this age. They WANT to be a part of the team. They WANT to be like mommy or daddy. Sure, it might not always get done the way I want (we’ve had a few cracked eggs and many unripe tomatoes 🥴) but it makes her feel proud so I’m happy to let her help 🥰 We also use collection times as learning opportunities to work on her counting!

I didn’t know this was even possible but some of these girls are laying more than once in a 24 hour period! On Tuesday I wasn’t able to collect eggs because every time I went out, someone was laying so I couldn’t get to the eggs. Yesterday, I moved the hens aside to collect eggs and there were 20! Today I went out and collected 13 less than 24 hours later! There are only 10 hens in this coop….🤯

We have 2 separate flocks of chickens. These are our current laying hens. And they have an enclosed run which is pretty big with swings and roosts but American Bresse are a very curious breed and love to forage. If they get bored they become very noisy. These girls were waking me up in the morning and basically just yelling all day trying to plan their escape. So I built this “forage station” and planted a chicken-safe pasture mix of nutritious grasses/legumes. This was a few weeks ago when it just started sprouting. They now spend a lot of the day foraging and have been pretty quiet 👍🏻 I call this a success! Happy hens and healthier eggs!
