Beans are harvested and already seeded into winter rye. Extremely busy fall! Picked up an old grain cart and an 8 row corn head for the combine this week and took a completely bent and rusted and broken old wagon if dads and turned it into a header cart! Now we are just a few small repairs away from harvesting corn as soon as the rain stops!

I know I haven't posted in a few weeks. It's been very hectic here between putting up approximately 3000 square bales of hay as well as custom work and trucking. Finally had some time today, and hopefully tomorrow to finish, the block worn for Mom and Dad's spring house project. I have to finish the 5th course then two more steps and we are ready to backfill and prep for concrete!!! The only visible part of the block will be from below by the spring bowl. Everything will have a concrete cap and we are core filling all the block just to make sure nothing moves!.

I want to take a moment to remind everyone to slow down in the countryside especially when coming up on farm equipment. Furthermore, DO NOT pass farm equipment on a double yellow line! Once again we have been hit by a vehicle trying to pass us as Martin Merrick and Dylan Rothwell were hauling hay home and were waiting on oncoming traffic to turn left onto the bale pad. A pickup didn't want to wait on the "slow moving equipment" (this happens to us at least 5~10 times every single day) and without slowing down began to pass the equipment going uphill with no idea that there were two vehicles coming at them. I had just pulled out of our driveway and was headed over to the bale pad and watched it all happen with absolutely no way to stop anything. Fortunately the oncoming traffic was slowing down after seeing the equipment and the person passing was not speeding and at the last second everyone hit the brakes and the passing truck hit the back of the wagon. Only damage was to the truck so they apologized profusely and took their bent up front end truck and went on their way and everyone went home uninjured. Someone on a motorcycle almost died a few years ago doing the same thing and during the process of cleaning all that up another speeding car texting while driving hit my parents and grandmother and sent them all to the hospital. It's not that big of a deal to wait the extra 30 seconds to a few minutes till you can safely pass when the operator knows that you are passing or they pull off the road. My fear is that one of our children begins to help out on the farm and doesn't know what we know and gets killed under the same circumstances. Everyone was very lucky today. I hope lessons were learned. In the mean time we will be contacting the local law enforcement and trying to get someone to issue fines until everyone stops passing us on a double yellow line in an unsafe area!

First time in my life growing corn! Last time I remember corn on the farm it was for silage and I was barely old enough to remember it. So I was definitely not missing this very important check of the corn crop on our nations birthday! Please excuse the dirty clothes.....we have been square baling hay and loading trailers today.

Updates on the spring house project! Got some more of the repair done today. I put a pic of the before first then pics from today. If you look closely you will see that this entire site is sitting on a coal bloom. The walls are build on the soft coal and there is shape right on top of the coal them the rocks and fill they used to fill back in. It is very common here to find houses and farms built centuries ago that centered around a spring like this. This originally fed the house, the milk/cheese/other items cooling trough, then went from there to the barn to keep the animals watered. All without any electricity! The water soaks down thru the soil layers till it hits the coal and can't get thru it and follows the seam till it finds a place to exit.....which is where these types of spring houses are built! They dug out for the 23" wide 14" deep hand carved stone bowl and packed around it with clay and then back filled the area with rocks to collect the water. Next step is to finish patching and filling cracks then pour the bottom floor and mud pad. Then concrete block and then pour the patio and steps. More to come as we proceed!

Starting to reassemble/repair the spring. As I said before, the original stones were dated to be set in 1911, wing wall on the left was 1912. First repairs with the old bricks were June or July of 1936, I can't make it out in the photo, and we're done by Joe, the gentleman who lived at the farm and helped run everything back then. If all goes well, tomorrow I'll be prying up the stone on the right just above what I didn't today, and the the one behind it, back into place and mortaring them in. Once those are secure the wall on the right comes out cause it's crumbling and was made from scrap rocks anyway. Then I'll repair the rest of the missing section. The giant hole I'm filling in was originally all fine finished cut sandstone but over the last 110 years the water has slowly dissolved those in that section. I can't believe it is still holding on cause there is literally just a tiny corner underneath keeping that big stone from falling out!

When done there will be a small landing in front of the stone bowl with a drain for the spring water and steps down to it. Patio up top for Mom and dad to put a hot tub on and have an extra sitting area.

Fire pit is done, still not full strength but she'll work just fine. Briskets cooking everywhere, big smoker has pork roasts going on any moment, baby calves bawling for breakfast in the background, and birds chirping good morning songs. Can't wait to see everyone!!!
