Northern Cross Vineyard

Northern Cross Vineyard We are a family owned farm winery that produces wines created from northern climate grapes.

As a winery located in the heart of the Upper Hudson Valley, Northern Star Vineyard's story is one of devotion, passion and a way of life. The vineyard's location has it's deep roots as one of the oldest properties in Easton, NY. Northern Star's land comes by way of the Schuyler Patent , and beginning in 1792, through the hands of the Beadle family that once held this land. In 2002, two high schoo

l sweethearts, Andrew and Kathleen Weber, married and decided to call this great property their own. Infatuated by the vineyards of Spain, they dreamed of owning their own vineyard and producing great wine. In 2009, they learned of northern climate grapes, Marquette, La Crescent, Frontenac and Prairie Star, grapes that thrived in the cold of the Upper Hudson Valley. They were soon smitten with these new varietals and began a quixotic undertaking into winemaking. Northern Star Vineyards works closely with Cornell to use sustainable vineyard practices in the land it proudly stewards. Vines are nurtured to meet the needs of the current generation without compromising the natural resources of future generations. With the addition of other unparalleled farm goods to the Vineyard, Northern Star has insisted upon like practices from its agricultural partners. From locally sourced cheeses and produce, Northern Star Vineyards represents quality in all of its products.

It was great to have a group of students from Williams College visit the vineyard today as part of their class exploring wine and fruit in the ancient world.

What made the visit especially interesting was how easily the conversation moved between past and present, what was wine like then and wine in ancient culture to the realities of growing grapes in a cold-climate region like the Upper Hudson.

We spent time in the vineyard, and a few students even tried their hand at pruning—getting a feel for the decisions that shape a crop long before it ever becomes wine.

It’s always rewarding to see how something they’ve read in texts comes to life in the field. In many ways, not much has changed in 2,500 years… and in other ways, everything has.

Thanks to the group for the great questions and conversation—really enjoyed having you here. 🍇
