Girl Meets Dirt

Girl Meets Dirt Artisan, organic, fruit preserves, shrubs, bitters & wine, handmade on Orcas Island since 2013. But we don't fuss– our ingredient lists are short and sweet.

Girl Meets Dirt Heritage Preserves are inspired by the long history of orchard keeping on Orcas Island– and a craving for the highest quality, locally sourced, organic fruit preserves nature and careful craft can provide. Our throwback fruit preserves are made in an old-school style that emphasizes structure and pure, ripe, naturally grown fruit. We never use commercial pectin. We believe organic,

island heritage fruit, speaks for itself. We pair single varietal fruit with unrefined organic cane sugar, fresh squeezed organic lemon juice, and classically prepare it by hand in our island kitchen. A natural pairing for cheese, our preserves upgrade a cheese platter to sublime. They bring a sense of gravitas to any meal– an appreciation for tradition: for the bounty the land provides, and the simple human ingenuity that inspired us long ago, to preserve it.

Six of them. Same ones since 2013.

Copper conducts heat more effectively than any other metal — and for the way we make our preserves, that matters. The faster we reach temperature, the more we preserve the fruit itself. The faster it cools down, the preserve doesn’t overcook once it hits set point. The wide bottom helps moisture evaporate quickly, which means more fruit in every jar. The copper lets us adjust heat fast and gives us control no other pan can.

Some very smart people also suggest the copper works its own kind of magic on the preserves. We’ll let you decide.

But honestly? They’re so, so pretty. That’s also why.

Six copper pots. Orcas Island. Since 2013. 🍑

Northern California didn’t happen overnight- and we’re just getting started.

Nugget Markets opened the door — July 2023, through a relationship built over years in the cheese and specialty food community.

Berkeley Bowl was a cold call. I left samples at the customer service desk and was sure I wouldn’t hear back. They called me.

Oaktown Spice- same story. Cold call, samples drop, and a leap of faith. Also the only place in the Bay carrying our bitters- and along with Berkeley Bowl, our shrubs.

Woodlands I’d worked on for years through buyer changes and turnover when Octavio pulled the trigger- sometimes it’s just elbow grease and persistence (and a lot of “no’s”).

Lunardi’s, Sigona’s & Bianchini’s we met through our partners at at a distributor show. The product did the talking.

We’re not done though 💪🏽. Stay tuned for more coming!

Every single one of these relationships was built on the same thing — heirloom fruit, copper pots, no shortcuts, and people who recognize quality when they taste it.

Girl Meets Dirt. Still made on Orcas Island. Still shipping out on the ferry.

We’re looking for someone who wants to get their hands into something real.
Girl Meets Dirt is hiring a Preserves Maker — someone to work alongside us in our Orcas Island kitchen, learning the craft of copper pot confiture the way we’ve practiced it for 12 years. No pectin. Heirloom fruit. Fair trade organic sugar. Fresh pressed California lemons. Every batch made by hand.
This isn’t a production job. It’s a craft apprenticeship in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
If that calls to you — or someone you know — link in bio for details. And please share widely. The right person is out there.

Excited to pour a taste of the islands for you Seattle 🌊🍎Wednesday 12/17 5-730pm Meet the Maker Wines by Girl Meets Dirt tasting. Come on out, this is an open event for 21+ and about the sweetest lil wine bar you ever did see.

Our natural island-grown pet-nats are bright, wild & beautifully alive. Expressing Orcas merroir & terroir with a crown cap (dipped in wax, just because). Crafted from heritage orchard fruit with native flora, following the fruits lead as our guide, these wines are a truly distinctive taste of place, my island home.

So many people have left an impression on this business; but this one, by far the most. They say it takes a village. Sometimes it takes a few incredible people. Kelsey is one of those. has worn all the hats, usually with at least one baby on her hip, and a smile. She’s packed your jams, stirred the pots, waxed poetic about heritage orchards at trade shows, scrubbed floors, picked fruit, made cheeseboards, negotiated contracts, hired & fired, packed pallets, driven a forklift, managed team building, all of it! A loving, doting mother, wife, friend, talented baker, active community member, she’s a fierce supporter and advocate and rolls her sleeves up before the fire has even started (and in small business, there are many fires, and often). We’ve been through a lot together, building our families all the while. She has started finishing my sentences when I can’t quite get out the words. To be grateful for this alignment is an understatement of epic proportions. You have left a mark, and you have more to do. How lucky am I. Thank you Kelsey, you Wonder Woman you. ✨

Ginny Jam, our spectacular collaboration jam, is back 💫. Truly unique with season bending beauty and a touch of booze, this plum preserve has a sweet spiked story and a heartfelt island ending.
In an orchard by the sea (Warm Valley Orchard) lies a grove of old Italian Plum trees, harvested by long time islanders Bob & Maria Nutt (whom I also purchased my very first 20lbs of Shiro Plums from long, long ago).

These beautiful plums have been crated off to Seattle the past few years to be soaked with botanicals in gin by for their lauded & award winning Plum Gin (check it out) (Bob is brothers with Copperworks Founder Micah).

A few years ago we fielded a call from Copperworks- basically- hey- we’ve got these boozy plums we normally compost but maybe you want them? HECK YA we do.
So in true full circle fashion we picked up a truckload of buckets of the inaugural 2021 season island Italian plums that had spent most of 2022 on the lash in a gin bath and brought them back home. We rolled up our sleeves and hand pitted each and every one of them, added some sugar and a squeeze of lemon to the party and have an exquisite new limited edition preserve - just in time for holiday soirées with sugar plum fairies...

For this batch, the plums are from the 2024 harvest and we just rescued them from their gin bath mere weeks ago. And now, voila, jam! The result: Botanical, floral, mulled wine & candied fruit: Ginny Jam, welcome back.

20% off (almost*) everything. Code: KEEPITSMALL
Meanwhile we’ll be noshing on this epic spread sipping wine because it’s Small Business Saturday and hopefully the biggest retail sales weekend of our year and as a teeny tiny business we’re definitely not working overtime (😏). Need help with a gift? Can’t decide which flavors to send? You’ll find yours truly on the Shopify chat; or stop by the shop on Orcas and say hi to Kelsey and taste some wine. We’re small but mighty like all the other small businesses out there today putting their best foot forward in a really tough season. Spread some love around today with your dollars if you can.
*limited editions excluded bc they’re $$ to make and margin matters
** ps, our wee team made this spread, styled it, shot it, and edited it making me so dang proud of our constant ability to bootstrap and make beauty from whatever tools we have at our disposal.
