Sitting here appreciating all of the people who have helped us get to this very place. I’m just barely starting to weave together the threads of “Women’s Work”.
Especially as it relates to my own family and lineage. Can’t wait to share some more as I’ve uncovered things this week that helps me reconcile why I’m drawn to this lifestyle and path.

Thank you for a lovely event yesterday and letting me exercise my public speaking muscles a bit. All I could think about was the time I did a speech in high school and couldn’t stop shaking. But I felt pretty comfortable and calm up there next to Amy (), who is a steadfast mentor and figure in our small but mighty ag community.

Photo of the entry arrangement designed with Tekla flowers. Isn’t it amazing?! It feels like spring, summer and fall collided.

We hope that workshops will be a cornerstone of our life on the farm. This is just the beginning and we can’t wait to share this experience with our attendees.

It will be beautiful and real and as I start to worry about all the things, Brian says “did you forget this is a working farm?” So I’m letting things be.

Come as you are, we will too.

We hope the honesty of it all translates into your own design you will take home. Fresh, full of life, joy and perfectly imperfect.

A beautiful way to spend your Sunday morning and beyond. Grab your seat at the table.

The summer after we bought the inn, Whitney came over to see it all. We stuck our toddlers in a wagon and wheeled them all around the farm.

As we were getting back to the inn she said, “Girl! You are landscape RICH! Let me know when you want to start a flower farm.”

I laughed it off. I was in the throes of just moving and had a 13 month old - me, a flower farmer?
“Yeah, OK, suuuure,” I said

It only took about 5 months before I was buying seeds from Johnny’s late at night after my Grandma’s funeral. My grandma that owned a shop called The Wildflower 😅 naturally. I don’t believe in coincidence; I just knew I needed to grow flowers.

It’s been three years. My camera roll is chocked full of designs and photos, we’ve grown thousands of plants, and sold thousands of bouquets.

This Sunday, May 17th, we are opening up the farm for an immersive floral design experience adding another layer to the foundation built three years ago. With the absolute blessing of learning from Whitney’s 20+ years as a floral designer.

We’ll take you back to the beginning where it all started on a farm tour and you’ll leave with beautiful flowers to maybe inspire you to grow a little more 🌱

We can’t wait to share this experience with you.

We wanted to send a heartfelt thank you ahead of our biggest weekend of the year.

It’s not often that we get the experience of watching something grow from a tiny seed to then be sitting on our kitchen table. That process is often very disjointed in today’s world.

Every time we deliver to the market a customer stops and says, “you really grow all these? Are you Tekla? Where do you grow them?”

From seed to table - we are happy to be your one stop shop for beauty on Orcas Island - “just down Orcas Rd, just before Deer Harbor Rd, you know where the horses are?” Yep that’s us.

See you later today at 12-4

Not thrilled our sheep got into one of our flower fields and had a dahlia feast.

Maybe they were doing us a favor and giving us less fall chores to do. Hope it was tasty, sheep! Just another day in trial and error farming.

The bond Archie and Hart have will forever be sweet 🤎

It seems no one dahlia graces our feed more than a Sherwood Peach dahlia. Very much a statement all on her own and loved by all. I brought a straight bunch of these to Whitney Page, a local designer and dear friend.

As our fresh flower season winds down, I find myself writing notes to myself in hopes I’ll have the space to review them before we begin again.

A dahlia lesson I’ve learned this year (and in the journey to more production flower farming) is the need for more plants of one variety. This year I did a max of only 10 plants per variety, as I was planting with u-pick in mind and not production. I found myself needing and wanting a lot more dahlias. Go figure 😅

As much as I’ve griped about dahlias… they are a plant that really wants to stay on our farm. They’ve earned their keep and I just need to be smarter about overwintering/storage/varieties/planting/fertilizing etc.

I’ll do another post on our favorite varieties but I’d love to know… what was your favorite from the year?

🛎️Also remember if you were a season pass holder you’ll be getting a dahlia tuber in the spring to plant or gift! So do let me know 😉😉
